Glad you like the photos, I thought they were worth sharing.
No, the Voyager went u/s after a lightning strike so we got airborne in a TriStar with 57 tons to offload. 4 Squadrons sent Typhoons to play so we tanked for almost 3 hours. Shame really, because I had hoped to get photos of Typhoons "contacting the hose" as the Voyager has wing pods, the TS has only centerline HDU. I had never seen fighters (Lightnings) on the hose when I was flying Victor tankers, they couldn't be seen from the Victor cockpit. Air Tanker showed us a brand new A330 tanker in their brand new hangar ! Lunch in the mess with the Stn Cdr was abandoned for the sortie so we had a snack pack airborne, RAF crew food has not improved since I left, but no matter ! It was a bit nostalgic when they took us to a VC10 because they are going out of service in a few weeks, the end of an era for this marvellous aeroplane which I had spent 6 years flying with BA. Made me feel really old when it was emphasised how long the 10 had been in service, I remember it well as I (dry) refuelled the first VC1O tanking trial in October 1966 (from Victor 1a XH 651 ) ! Here's a picture of the old girl and her internal tank. Wonderful day out, the RAF is in good hands ! Back to reality, work on my JWM hawk ! Regards, David. PS Camera used was Canon EOS 50. |
RE: Typhoons

Interesting, I can see the Eurosport I have is Way off scale...
The refueling probe mechanism is fascinating. Seems like a compact design to fit in a small space. Pretty close up to the canopy. Andre |
RE: Typhoons
Very nice pictures. Always love the looks of the Typhoon..wish Carf-model would make a scale version and replace the sport ;).
|
RE: Typhoons
Yes, the Eurosport has a similar outline but that's about as nar as it gets to a Typhoon. IFR probe is quite a complex mechanism with a couple of doors and some serious geometry, a real work of art.

RE: Typhoons
I was VERY impressed at the probe operation, it looked just so smooth and precise. Took the pictures from the tanker, next time from the Typhoon, hopefully, I'm working on it.
Two things left me more than a little surprised after visiting AirTanker (apart from the huge cost to MOD of the private finance initiative, 1.2m pounds PER DAY for the next 27 years) it has NO probe or refuelling receptacle, unlike the Australian tankers and it has no cargo door, and at the end of the contract we still won't OWN them. However, I guess M o D must know what they are doing (be the first time for many years though !) but, as usual, the Aussies bought theirs as they did with their C17s. ..and, Rob, the bar (party room) at the back of the 380 is quite something, rather like the aeroplane itself, THE machine for long haul, making the 747 seem as dated as it is. Glad you all liked the pictures, I was really pleased with them. Regards, David. |
RE: Typhoons
David, if you get the chance some video showing the extend/retract sequence on the probe would be nice. Could be a nice challenge to reproduce!

Glad you all liked the pictures, I was really pleased with them. Regards, David. The brand new all 380 terminal at DBX is quite something with the capacity for up to 20 A380 jets at the same time! Hopped off the 380 onto a 777 which is my favourite Boing jet and noted next to us Emirates has the 1000th 777..impressive stuff. Sorry for the slight divergence off topic. Rob. |
