Eflight Blanik 4.2m with turbine?
I just recently receive my new Eflite Blanik glider. I am interested in putting a turbine on it. The wings on this glider are like surfboards and I know can hold up to aerobatic manuveres gliders are capable of.
I would like to hear from those of you who have put turbines on gliders what could be concerns or areas I shoud pay particular attention to. My biggest hurddle and probably most important is the design of the turbine support modual. I have some ideas on this based on the full scale turbine powered Blanik. Will receive my Blanik kit tomorrow.
It weighs 10 kilos (22 lbs) AUW as a glider so i will be interested also to see which turbne would be suitable, maybe Merlin VT80, JC P100. The fin might need a heat shield ? Phil.<br type="_moz" /> |

P-60 would be perfect, gliders don't need 1:1

I was also going to say, 1:1 on a glider would be silly, remember the lift efficiency these things have including a low drag fuse, even a P20 would assist the glider as it's used to being propelled by the natural thing called wind :)
I would go for a P60 though, bit of oomph and all that jazz :) |

I agree 1:2 is nearer the mark. The glider will retain the energy for much longer than a normal scale aircraft. If you fly with 1:1 there is a real danger you would rip the wings off. I would think a wren 44 or kingtech k60 would be good candidates in addition to the p60.

Here you go. It actually Flys fantastic. I did have to add a nose wheel as the thrust pushes the nose down on takeoff.

The Bee looks a good choice. I had overlooked that when replying earlier. Interesting you had the same issue about the nose wheel as I had with my Swift. I also had to add a nose wheel to stop the nose burying itself in the ground at takeoff. I have been too lazy to fit a retract mechanism and I know people hate seeing it.
Incidentally the price of this glider is really quite high. I see that there are optional flaps and air brakes. On a plane like this powered by a turbine I would strongly recommend you have them fitted. The glider will come in fast even at a low angle and float on. Our Swift has both flaps and airbrakes and it slows very quickly with the air brakes. In the Uk the Blanic with these options is over £800. Paf-Flugmodelle do a similar size Fox at about the same price as do TopModel in CZech republic and Blue airlines in Germany. John |

I just fitted a fixed wheel, well to the front. It looks ugly and really needs a retractable wheel. Single wheel glider retracts are available in various sizes. Hobbyking do various sizes with and without gear doors and are with electrics. Not sure how strong they are though. This wheel is only used to stop the nose burying itself especially on grass runways. You want it well forward of the main landing wheel. The full size Grob 2 seater has twin wheels and there are others as well. Have a look for inspiration. Have a look at the video link I posted, takeoff is not a problem when you have a second wheel.
We have crow and in my opinion is not enough to make landings easy and spot on. If you are spending all that money on a plane it is a false economy not to fit them. I shall follow this thread with interest. John |

The Blanik has a bit more drag than your swift. Maybe this is why slower landing speed are achived without the use of airbrake/ spoiler. Honestly there are no issuse with landing or landing speeds. I will try to get some video very soon.

Do you have some wood built up inside the fuse to support the mount and is there any cross bracing between the root ribs? I am so stoked to do this now that I see it is doable. Also, I would have gone way to big on the turbine. I was thinking K80 but now 60 is looking more resonable. the Super Bee is a nice engine if I could find one at a resonable cost Scott |

I presume the nose wheel is to prevent rash when flying off asphalt and not to increase the angle of incidence of the wing during takeoff. If that is the case, since I would be flying the Blanik 100% off our grass field, I don't think I would need the nose wheel. Right? Tom |

Then I use 2"x2" 1/8 ply square glued in under the carbon. The area is Very rigid. Zero flex in that area. |

I use full elevator on takeoff the whole way down the runway. Lifts off gently then starts becoming more responsive to pitch. |
