Skymaster Paint

What's up with Skymaster, I need just 1oz. of paint to repair my A-10
They want $55 for shipping 1 oz. of touch up paint, from China
Really.

Thats probably $.50 for paint and $54.50 for shipping.

Better off going through a local paint shop.

Possibly a "dangerous goods" Issue. Paint is considered dangerous goods, and cannot be shipped with normal freight. The documentation costs alone can be expensive for this kind of item.

Unfortuanately shipping costs a lot. I sent a 1lbs package from Toronto to Australia at work this week, cost was $70. China's not much closer.

I paid about the same for my red touch up paint.
It arrived on a broken plastic container, spilled throughout the wrapping.
I had oredered through bvm. I asked if I could either get the paint again(in the bottle this time) or a refund.
I got nothing.
It has been months.
Biggest waste of $60

Here's an alternative.
Warplanes are patch repaired all the time. Paint rarely matches even from the same batch. Close is good enough, and quite scale. I've seen our crew chiefs rattle can away! Not preffered, but time is of the essence. I'm sure Air Force dudes are the same thus:

So true Chris. Scale planes have sealant, RTV, all sorts of paint products used. Just pick a panel, tape around it and use testors model master paint, they should have a close enough color you could use.

Did same for my red/black MB339 and the red paint I got from them was totally different colour. More orange than anything. Thinking that the exposure to bright sun light may have cause the colour change on the model. They were good about it and gave me a refund. The amount of paint they sent me could have covered three models. Got a fantastic match at a local supplier just 5 minutes down the road.

Any good auto paint supplier should be able to do a scan color match. I have done touch up work from the same can the model was originally painted from and it still is not a perfect match. The nice thing about military colors as said above it only looks more true to scale. Full scale fighters look amazingly rough when you get up close to them.
It would however be nice if a color match kit could be included with the model even for just a little extra charge.

Hey Pete that's not bad, they quoted me $99.00 to ship a $20 clear canopy[:@][:@][:@]

I also needed paint for the Skymaster Dragon that I am repairing and I didn't wnat to pay the shipping or wait for ever for the paint to arrive from Skymaster, so I went to the local Automotive paint store with panels in hand and said match it, not thinking to ask how much it would cost. My second mistake is I asked for a pint each, my third mistake is I didn't specify the brand.

Big mistake!

They mixed it in DuPont Chroma base:

The Green was $82.67 [X(][X(][:@]

The Blue was $60.09 [X(][X(][:@]

The White was 53.38[X(][X(][:@]

HI Guys, paint will never match, jet fades, even 1 week in the sun.
My colour is flat, which gets complicated for the supplier.
Also, all our high VOC paints are gone, only water base, here in Canada.

Hi Rich, next time, ask for Omni, not the best paint but cheap and good enough, about $30+ a quart.

Pete, you can still buy solvent based auto paint, it is just VOC compliant now. The older, higher VOC versions are no longer available. I've used the newer low VOC stuff and can't notice a differnce.

Pete,
Bring a part with you to Home Depot and get them to match it. Try a satin paint, it should be very close. If its still to glossy you can spray a light coat of krylon flat clear over the painted area to dull it even more. I have done this on repairs and it looked fine.

Give us an update on the color match , and if it was worth the trouble to try to get from SM , verses going to the local paint shop .
