Jet World Cup???
 

Following on from this year's Jet World Masters, I've been thinking about why certain teams (specifically the UK as that is my home country) may not have fielded a full team. I've also been thinking about how to alleviate the difficulty of having one scale model team that is likely to be very difficult to beat and whether this may be putting people off participating.

It got me thinking about the possibility of a Jet World Cup or Jet Olympics, with several different disciplines combining to produce a team score.

You could still have the scale element but could also have 'flying scale', aerobatics, formation etc all as part of one big event. This would encourage people that might not be likely to win an event to take part to build up team points. It would also encourage those whose interest lies in a different discipline of the hobby to join in with the competetive spirit

Has anything like this been done before? Would it work? Do people think that a multi-discipline event would be better or worse than the current JWM?

Formation Cup was started to allow teams to play. Flying only.
Anyone wanting competition experience can enter the UK Nationals scale and fly a scale jet. Lower key and KNOW someone is watching your flight, our Top Gun event...I'm judging next year :-)

Maybe start with something in the UK like that. Be good to drum up a bit more competition whilst not being too overly serious. There are plenty of regular little groups of jet flyers who'd probably be up for becoming a 'team' and would enjoying going up against each other in something that isn't too serious.

Nationals is not just jets (not a bad thing but still think an all jet event would be cool) and the Top Gun event isn't really anything more than someone thinking "that was a nice flight"

Top Gun has a long track record of world class modeling and competition. Anyone that has attended will easily dispute the impression that it is just a showcase.
It is different than the WJM, no doubt. But different doesn't mean less of a world class event.

That was how we wanted it to be, as it was felt that a competition with slotting etc would put people off. Bickley jets gave me the idea of' a jet meet with a few trophies' and it seems to work well. Maybe it needs to change if that is what people want? events like this cannot develop without feedback, always willing to listen to peoples ideas.

Jamie, not knocking the TopGun event, it's a great site and laid back (as you are trying to achieve). I was talking in terms of if people were looking for any sort of competitive event, TopGun isn't really it. That leaves the (mixed power plant) Nationals and nothing else.

Well the Bishops are planning a uk type of Jetpower next year perhaps such an event could be incorporated there?

How about limiting the funds for a scale jet at the world Masters to say..100.000 usd....?

the Scale flying at the UK Nationals and also at the WJM can be very boring for spectators as it tends to be one plane after another doing the same thing. If you look at the UK nats as an example most of the people watching are on the showline and not the competition areas. This makes me feel that a freestyle type of event would be best.

OK, here you go. Train journey musings for a new style event that could be competitve but still have an element of fun :confused:

Team size : 4

Rounds : 4 - 1. Scale, 2. Aerobatic (known), 3. Aerobatic (freestyle), 4.Formation

Round 1 : Scale

Flown and judged along lines of TopGun/WJM

Round 2 : Aerobatic (known)

An aerobatic schedule is available x months prior to the event. Practice it and fly it on the day as best you can. Judged as per F3A/IMAC style comps

Round 3 : Aerobatic (freestyle)

Pilot flies a freestyle/display/demo routine to music. Judged and scored as per Tucson Shootout/XFC style comps

Round 4 : Formation (min 2 aircraft, max 4)

Routine is flown to music with a minimum of 2 aircraft. Bonus points for 3 or 4 flying but the risk of poor formation points is increased! Judged along lines of Formation Cup.

General Thoughts
1. Each pilot can only fly 1 event to avoid superstar pilots winning every round (with the exception of flying in the formation round)
2. Each flight approx 5-6mins with a 3-4min turnaround between flights would allow approx 15-20 flights in a 3hr window.
3. Limit of 15 teams (that's 60 pilots so should be more than enough)
4. Those not in a pre-arranged team can put their names into a hat and the organisers pull out teams of 4 for on the day.
5. 2 day event. 10am - 1pm on Day 1 for first round, 2pm - 5pm on Day 1 for round 2. 10am - 1pm on Day 2 for third round, 2pm - 5pm on Day 2 for final round

this is similar to "sports championship" in Italy
we have about 40 pilot and 8 teams each competition (no restriction in team size)

the competition starts on Friday evening with a large table full of things to eat

Saturday and Sunday each pilot performs:
- An INTRO flight (5 simple steps to invite beginners at this competition)
- An AEROBATICflight with figures choiced from a list published at the beginning of the year (various degrees of difficulty K-factor)
- A SCALE flight (second IJMC)

at the end of a personal flight, a pilot for each team makes an EDF flight (to promove the EDF)

In Italy is a huge success and many new pilot have approached jet models
