Super Phoenix MK2 assembly thread.

The full review is available on my blog here:
http://www.ultimate-jets.net/blogs/j...1-introduction

I recently received the brand new MK2 Super Phoenix from Aviation Design and wanted to share the buil and flight tests with you.

This plane is my baby and I worked on this new version for about 4 years through two prototypes.
The very specific feature about this plane is that the rear fuselage and boom area are CAD designed to create a venturi effect when the engine is at full power and the plane is standing still in the air. This venturi effect creates a flow of air around the rudders and elevator, enabling to control the plane during hovering without an vector thrust system or gyros.
The kit came in a fairly reasonably sized cardboard box that was quite easy to handle.
The manufacture quality is the same as the Scorpion Mk2. The plane is produced the Czech republic from drilled Airex and high quality fabrics and epoxy. The plane comes painted in the moulds.

  • New moulds CNC cut with perfect moulding plans
  • Aero grade plywood/ liteply formers CNC cut and precisely adjusted.
  • Drilled Airex composite sandwich.
  • Airframe painted in the moulds using aero grade gel coat.
  • New Stabilizer and rudders improved for 3D flights
  • New live hinging technique using specific hinging nylon ribbons

The plane was CAD designed from the previous paper drawings and optimized for 3D maneuver. All the formers were re-designed for optimum weight saving.

It is the only plane in the world to be able to hover and to perform basic 3D maneuvers WITHOUT THRUST VECTORING and WITHOUT GYROSCOPES. The speed range on this model is also unique since it can fly from 0 mph ( hovering in front of you ) to 300 mph in a full power pass with our B100F.
Bear in mind that due to these exceptional performances we require the customer to fly the plane with a GPS feedback enabled system to comply with the AMA/FAA regulations, including speed and height restrictions.

Here are a few pictures of the Swiss scheme model I received a few days ago.

The model assembled in my workshop:

A few details of the fuselage inner structure:
The front and rear main formers have been carefully CAD designed for optimum strength and weight saving.

The drilled Airex is visible at the bottom.

The nose gear structure:

The main radio tray structure:

The weights are as followed:

Fuselage: 1750 grs
Right boom: 330 grs
Left boom: 310 grs
Left wing: 454 grs
Right wing: 478 grs
Stab: 250 grs
Kevlar tank: 163 grs
Wing tube and accessory pack: 400 grs
Servos and receiver: 360 grs
Batteries: 350 grs
Merlin VT80 all up and 5 min of fuel: 2400 grs
Or B100F with 5 min of fuel: 3000 grs
Behotec gear: 900 grs

This makes a total of 8145 grs for the VT-80 option ( 80 N of thrust ) and should be just enough to enable the plane to hover.
However that makes a total of 8745 grs for the B100F option ( 120 N thrust ) and will ensure a thrust margin of 37% above its own weight for stratospheric performances.
I have flown this configuration on my previous Super Phoenix that was about 1 kg heavier and the performance of the aircraft was outstanding.

A few picture from this morning's photo shooting session.
This should give a good idea of the layup quality.
The surface is as good as the Scorpion Mk2. However the engineering of the internal structure is a step above what was done on the Scorpion in terms of weigth saving.

I am working on a package to include the B100F as a powerplant with the Superphoenix right now.
Pictures to come soon...

Hey Oli, got the first flight on Super Phoenix in Houston TX last week end,

all i can say is WOW, what great flying jet,

and plenty of working room under the canopy makes for easy maintenance.

Thanks Oli for helping out with the questions along the way - made sure NO surprises on first flight !!

Please tell Woody thanks for all the extra effort keeping the parts coming in on the rush orders ,

you guys are great at Ultimate Jets !!

I fly all over Houston area, let me know if anyone wants to see the Phoenix fly.

take care , Joe

olnico 11-12-2013 04:26 AM

Thanks for the update Joe.
And congratulations for the maiden!
Any video of the flights?

rcfun2005 11-12-2013 04:30 AM

there is some video out there , it should be on way to me, will keep you updated , Joe

Rcfun

What engine are you running in it? I have a Kingtech 80 looking for a new home. Would that be a good home for it?

rcfun2005 11-12-2013 06:33 AM

Hey Chris, i have the K-100, which is at high end of recommended thrust range , so unlimited vertical, and lots of power. I also had this turbine before i got the jet , so i was not going to purchase another turbine. the down side to K-100 , is it uses alot of fuel very short flight time , so i added fuel saddle tanks, now plenty of flight time now.

the K-80 would probably be right inline on recommended thrust range , and you would get normal flight times with just the stock fuel tank, so i would think it would be solid match !

I think Oli ran a K-80 at some point on the Phoenix , so he would have some direct info for you, he might already have it posted somewhere.

Congratulations Joe! It was great to see you get her in the air. I took a few pictures of your first couple of flights. Enjoy and let me know if you need anything else. Oh, and I have your rudder tabs when you are ready to start hovering! ;)

What scheme did you go with? I love the yellow and black scheme. I was thinking about getting the scorpion but I think my engine wouldn't be enough for it so I may just go with the phoenix

chris1971 11-12-2013 06:53 AM

Never mind someone posted your pics while i was asking the question

chris1971 11-16-2013 08:34 PM

Olnico,

Your website shows a yellow and black superphoenix so I am waiting for that color to show up. When will it be ready for purchase?

We'll be receiving one at the shop tomorrow if the postman is on time...
80N thrust will give you a power to weight ratio of 1:1.
As a matter of fact I have flown the older Phoenix for many years with a P-60 with great success ( that was 10 years ago, when the P-80 was just too big in diameter for this rig ).

chris1971 11-17-2013 07:44 AM

Olinco,

Are you talking about it coming to the shop in Texas? Could you take some pics of it together and post them here?

Pantherman 11-17-2013 08:28 AM

I am at the shop in Houston and will be happy to dry fit the jet and get some pictures to post on here as well as on our facebook page. Hopefully it will arrive tomorrow.

Woody

olnico 11-17-2013 08:28 AM

Yep, to Houston.
Of course we'll take some pictures and put them on our Facebook page,.
I'll get Woody to put them here as well.
Regards.
Oli.

olnico 11-17-2013 08:29 AM

Hey Woody, we got that one exaclty at the same time!
