Carsten Products and Ultimate Jets
I have decided to start distributing the products designed by my friend Carsten Groen in the USA.
We have an order of a batch of Carsten's ASSI coming to Houston soon. We will also get a batch of CAN LCD units coming, either as standalone units or as ASSI display units. The products should be in stock at the very beginning of 2014. Stay tuned... |
|
thats great news Oli.
|
That's a lot of data and function for the price
|
Thanks guys.
A new user manual is available on the download section of the product page. http://www.geohei.lu/olin/data/model...al%20v0.08.pdf The unit is now configurable as Master or Slave ( multi engine setups ) direcly in the config file that is stored on the SD card. |
The units are reaching the final stage of production: i/o testing.
They will dispatch very soon! https://scontent-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hpho...09653103_n.jpg We are starting the work on integrating these units into the Weatronic system via the serial interface. They will be Jetcat and Xycoy/ Merlin compatible initially. We are also looking at Behotec/ BF-Turbines compatibility... |
I have added some description on the CAN LCD product page about the ASSI and standalone versions:
http://www.ultimate-jets.net/product...lcd-can-module |
1 Attachment(s)
Attached is a piece of a log from the CANLCD module (in the standalone mode) connected to a P100RX
The following are logged every second: 1) timestamp (time since CANLCD was switched on) 2) Remaining fuel in the tank 3) RPM 4) Commanded RPM (from transmitter) 5) EGT 6) ECU battery voltage 7) Current pump voltage 8) Failsafe time (in seconds) 9) State 10) Off condition When the CANLCD module detects that the ECU has been in failsafe for more than 30 seconds, it stop communicating with the ECU (and shows a message on the LCD screen). If not handled this way, the ECU will not (always) power down automatically when the receiver is switched off (as it will see the communication from the CANLCD and think it's services are still needed ;)) |
Carsten:
Very nice work !! Now you just need to make it talk to a Spektrum. FYI... over on RC Groups, there is a group of guys who have already decoded the Spektrum data buss. It's basically just I2C data. |

Weatronic is probably closer to be available ! To be honest, maybe sometime in the future I would do something similar for other brands of transmitters (and as a personal opinion, I2C has nothing to do as an "external bus" in my opinion, it was designed to be used inside a TV and should be used as such. Many other busses are much more effective for external use, CAN, "RS232/RS485", Serial bus etc) But as I wrote, maybe one day. The biggest part of the ASSI device was making the AoA calculations, SBUS2 telemetry and the whole autothrottle stuff (JetCat protocol was easy as I already had designed a couple of products for this) |
can you make a protective plastic cover for the unit? its nice but I think it would look better with a little plastic shell like a receiver to protect the unit.
Also in the future a fuel flow meter to determine fuel usage would be really cool or perhaps this could be determined by fuel pump voltage? |
Fuel flow, it's already there when running with JetCat and Gaspar ECU's :)
You will get the amount left in the tank and the amount of fuel consumed each minute (at the current power setting) Plastic shell, that means a huge cost in tooling so this is probably a no-go. A simple solution could be a cnc milled glassfiber board that would fit below the ASSI device and fixed with 4 pcs of 2mm screws. This would make a good base for a piece of velcro etc (could also mount a plate on top of it). So far this is up to the end user. |
I am working on a basalt fiber box.
The mold will be CNC machined from aluminium. |

Another nice option is to offer a 3d file so one who has, or has access to a 3d printer could just print one overnight. :)

I have added a video demonstration of the CAN LCD module capability on the product page.
A must watch! http://www.ultimate-jets.net/collect...lcd-can-module |
Cool.May I ask what is the latency in the communication channel between actual input and reading?.will there be one for kingtech turbine?

For the ASSI unit display on the Tx, the signal travels through the air pretty much instantly to the Tx. So lag is expected to be a few ms as well. As soon as Gaspar has finalized his serial converter, the units will be compatible with Merlin, Jet Central and Kingtech turbines. Should be very, very soon as he already has the beta prototypes running and being finalized. I'll have the converter boards in stock as soon as they are available. |
Tks for your prompt reply. May I ask : what is the accuracy or tolerance limits in the readouts? Lastly will there be a protective cover over this LCD screen?

The accuracy and tolerance limits are the ones set by the ECU. Since all the information is digitally sent from the ECU to the CAN/LCD and ASSI units, there is no loss of fidelity on the display. Typically the accuracy is set by the sensors chosen by the ECU manufacturer. EGT, RPM and pump voltage readout. We are working on the casings for both ASSI and CAN LCD units. They will be 3D printed or basalt fiber moulded. |
Will it be compatible to Lambert Kolibri engine? thanks again and Happy New Year to u. Cheers
|
With pleasure.
The price that you see on the web page is already an introduction price. As soon as the pre-order/ first batch will be passed, the price will increase. Best regards. |
Implemented the Xicoy ECU telemetry in the ASSI device today. The radio and the (optional) CANLCD module will show data from Xicoy ECUs:
1) Fuel left in tank 2) RPM 3) EGT 4) ECU battery voltage http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUYSz1pjM54 |
Thanks Carsten.
Now the ASSI device is officially compatible with all Xicoy ECUs. This means compatibility with Merlin, Jet Central, Kingtech, etc... |
The user manual has been updated with Xicoy setup and connection:
