Best servos for jets these days?

I'm about to outfit 2 jets with servos and there are a lot more brands available these days than just JR, Hitec, and Futaba. Now we have Spektrum, MKS, Savox, and Futaba Sbus to add to the mix. So I am curious, what are your "go to" servos? Mine have been the JR 8711 and 8911hv, however I am open to considering new options.

Your going to start hearing about these like crazy.

All the blue Shirt crack dealers are pushing them!! lol

Thanks and LOL at "blue shirt crack dealers!" I forgot about Spektrum. Aren't these made by Savox? Do you have any experience with them?

Jetflyer3000 12-07-2013 08:51 AM

My view on this quite frankly is that any good servi between 6 - 10 kg will be ok and it is unnecessary to spend more that £30 per servo.

I always use hitec in more planes than I can count

jetpilot 12-07-2013 08:52 AM

Dantley,
To be quite honest with you I don't know much about them. I don't think they are Savox, but im sure we will find out on this thread. Pablo and I were talking about servos the other day and he said Peter Goldsmith was telling him about these.
I think they are going to grab some of the market share with high end servo offerings.
We were talking about trying some out. They look interesting.
Ive been a diehard 8411, 8611, 8711, 8911 servo guy over the years with zero complaints but these might be worth a look.
Maybe we can get some more info here.

Scott, The specs look good. I am curious to know how they center relative to JR, which is the gold standard IMO and if they develop slop, which is the Achilles's heel for JR servos.

luv2flyrc 12-07-2013 09:14 AM

Have always used 8411, 8711,8911 as well but, I'm told that these are the new latest/greatest: One of the "blue shirt crack dealers" told me his jet performed "night n day" better with these:

They're at least $100 more ea than 8911's though! If cash is no issue, they seem to be the cat's meow :)

JR cant go wrong, but i run lots of Savox they have proved to be excellent. Very good centering not as much slop as JRs and extremely strong. Nothing like seeing them take repeated abuse in RC cars and keep coming back for more. Used to use hitecs but im slowly getting away from them.

kevinthoele 12-07-2013 10:26 AM

I think Spektrum had to do something since the split with JR. I think the coreless HV higher end ones are good and will be useing them in my new hornet with the composite wings we are develping for the Yellow Twin

Dave Wilshere 12-07-2013 11:00 AM

It makes sense that eventually something could pop JR's bubble...but stop and think. Do you really want to test these out in your $$$$$ jets! I've tested lots of servos that have looked good, been fine...but I still put JR in all my premium models and I can't see that changing. I have thousands and thousands of flights to draw on experience.
JR have plenty of new servos other than the 8411 & 8711. I'm flying some in decent models, wouldn't even think about putting my name behind them for a while yet.
I sell into the thousands of JR each year.

Quick release for servo leads simplify wiring and maintenance
That little "feature" does not fill my heart with warm fuzzies.
I don't like the idea of addings another (unneccessary) electrical connection. The connectors are the weakest link between the battery/reciever and the servos, adding an extra one to each servo doesn't seem like a good idea. Also, it seems there are very few situations where this would actually be a benefit during installation.

Other than that, the specs and the price look pretty good.

cyphur01 12-07-2013 11:16 AM

Dantley I am Pretty sure the spektrum servos are savox that are rebranded and have a new output gear to match JR spline. I've been using align servos on all my 700-800 helis for a while. They are rebranded savox as well. Those (align) are brushless hv and ultra fast with good centering. Anton uses savox on a bunch of his models and even suggests them on the site. I have a whole batch of these going into a comp arf spitfire as well as a high speed high voltage for rudder with a gyro. My builder seemed impressed by them. I haven't seen them in person. Kevin, my builder said he plugged in the quick release and cannot figure out how to release them and they will not come out. So that's good. I guess

FYI, Savox manufacture both Spektrum and Align servos, they have been manufacturing servos for some of the big names for many years including some Futaba (or so I have been reliably informed). I have had good luck with Futaba S9156 servos http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXRAX0&P=3 used in my large gassers for some years and more recently jets, my JR 8911 (different I believe to what you guys get in the USA) have developed a large amount of slop in the gear train in a very short time in service.

Quick connect was done for the heli boys, swapping out is much easier, also removal for repairs...
In jets I see few uses.

That makes sense. I can see where that would be a useful feature for helicopters.

Savox 1230 500 oz 6v $74.99 same speed as jr 8711 1/2 price .

Well, at least someone who buys these $250.00 servos will be getting lots of numbers and letters for their money ... MPH83TWV

That comes out to only $31.25 per character. Not bad.

Or as JR calls them, JRPSMPH83T

That comes out to $25.00 per character. Now, that's a bargin. JR gives you two extra characters! Isn't that nice!

Dave Wilshere 12-07-2013 02:06 PM

Cost is down to numbers...I remember when 8411 and 8711 servos were near twice the price...then we bought thousands and thousands.

quist 12-07-2013 02:11 PM

I have been using Futaba 9156 servos for the last few years. Never had a problem. Now I am using Fut 9074sb and 9072sb these are sbus servos. They have been perfect. I have them in 3 jets.

flejter1 12-07-2013 02:24 PM

Hey Dantley,

I just finished a 60CC Corsair build for Clay and used the Savox servos. They seem very well built and centered consistent. I am going to start my Fae Bao T-33 and will be using Savox servos SC-1232SG 305oz for control surfaces ($70.00) and SC-1232SG 500 oz for flaps ($74.00). They are strong and fast servos for half the price of the JR's. I have read and hear nothing but good about them is why I am trying them out, well that and Barry is a dealer for them. LOL I also here rumor that Savox builds Futaba servos and after reading this thread it seems they make many other labels as well.

I have had great luck with Futaba brushless units.. smooth and reliable so far, in all types of planes...

dubd 12-07-2013 03:20 PM

Lots of good info here. Seems as though the guys using Savox really like them.

Tony, I've yet to use a sbus servo, but considering I have a Futaba radio I'll take a closer look at the 9074 and 9075.

Dirk, glad to hear you're getting the T-33 going!

Shaun Evans 12-07-2013 03:21 PM

Hi,

I'm really digging the Airtronics offerings in digital. You don't hear much about them, but they've got power to spare, great prices and way better tightness retention than JR IMO--especially the mini 94820. Drop-in replacement for the 3421 and a better servo at almost half the price.
