CARF Ultra Flash with P-160SX

Hello guys.

i will soon be finishing my CARF Flash with P-160SX, and dhe is going to be fast!

what i would like to know is do you guys have any special tips for this setup? i.e reinforcements? fuel tank tips etc?
i will be using the fuse tank and wing tank.

thanks.

You do not need to do anything special with a 160. There are guys flying e ultra flash with 180s and Behotec 220s without any mods.

Any links for the UF with the Behotec 220? i gotta see that one! ;)

It was mentioned in another thread. I do not have any first hand knowledge on it. I've owned 2 ultra flashes with 160sx engines. Ryan H, furloughedual had one with a p-180rx.

I ran a Merlin 160 in a classic flash - alot of push !!!

You'd be surprised, I have a 100 powered Classic Flash that is not that much slower than my buddies, who are running 140's and 160's. People are always surprised that it "only" has a 100 in it. You don't get that much more speed with a bigger engine, it does accelerate faster though. It's no different than cars or bikes. It always takes a huge increase in HP to get very small gains in speed. You won't need to beef it up with a 160

If you start doing full throttle runs and laps and loops (and that airframe can take that all day long) make sure you give your self 1 less minute to fly because you will go through fuel at a much faster rate.

I found my P-100RX powered Ultra to be absolutely fine once on step, but lacked to TO/GA authority of my P120 powered Sprint. I sold my P100 & swapped it for a K180G, not for more speed, but mainly just to have a powerhouse in the fleet to power bigger things if needed. Have not flown it with the 180 yet though

I've got a Merlin 100 in my Swiss Ultra and a lot of people commented at the weekend how surprised they were that it was only a 100, flying both back to back, I do prefer the vertical of the 140 but I find I can still get an 8 minute flight even on the 100, I much prefer the lighter feel on the sticks and the sloooooooow aero's :) probably around ....... 100mph 8 points and knife edge will sound boring to the average 300mph UF pilot, but it does it so well, and I couldn't afford another 140 ;)

I have TITAN SE in mine. I would recommend installing the full bypass if you really want to get max speed. I also recommend setting up some minimal crow for landing, (4-5mm) up aileron with up elevator on full flaps. It eliminated ballooning/bouncing on landings on mine. I second Rafi's suggestion, if youre going for full blown sprints, lower your time to around 5minutes flying so you will have a minute or two to land (6min total).
good luck

Same here in a classic. Miss it a bunch but I had a healthy dose of respect for it when I owned it. I don't buy the argument that the 100's are just as fast. Ask anyone who saw mine fly....

Prolly the toughest sport jet out there.

I also have a Titan SE in mine. I also use crow for landing. I am running the wing and main tank for fuel. I have the saddle tanks for smoke. No bypass and mine is fast as we'll. My good buddy runs a p140rx and his is wicked fast with the bypass and can Cruz from a hill climb well over a lap at idle.
The airframe has over 250+ flight and is still rock solid. And I am the second owner, and the first owner was not ***** footing it around either. The best jet I have ever flown. Just put it this way. The UF was and is my first turbine plane. Got my waiver with it.

Does anyone know if the stock pipe can handle a kg180 or 180 size engine ?

ravill 05-07-2014 09:22 AM

The pipe Carf gives you is pretty beefy. Like all pipes, just inspect it every few flights. Shine a light down the length of it, check it for stress, hot spots when you take the wing off. Like that.
