AMT Olympus electric start
 

I have a new AMT Olympus engine that is a air start version. Who can I get to install a electric starting motor
for me? I don't want full auto start. Just want a way to spool engine up for starting without using air. Any ideas?

Amt Netherlands. Or if you know a good machinist, or you are one, diy. Pull the intake, make some s tandoffs. Mount the starter motor. You might need another compressor nut also. Or machine the existing one.

I had all my airstart AMT's done at AMT Netherlands. I still use the Auto Start unit that I used with air, except the air solenoid now triggers the electric starter via cable inserted through the umbilical cord and plugged into the new starter - works perfectly.

But AMT's are so heavy... it's really not worth adding a starter to them. Besides... unless you are changing to another ECU... the air start ECU's won't control the starter... so you are still basically doing a manual start.


I use a blower to start mine, so I don't' have to deal with a scuba tank.

Not true if you are using the AMT ASU. The normal Airstart ECU will work fine....see my explanation earlier in this thread. I have done this and used this for a long time.

Right decision - Bennie is the right person to deal with. You will be happy as you no longer need a big airtank ( but you can still use it as backup). I have all my starting equipment in a small case. Here is a before and after of my starting set up:

If later you want to upgrade to an on board fully auto start system, you will have to add two solenoid's and a new ECU. I have done this as I have been transferring my engines to new installation.

All I need is a way of spooling up the engine for start and get rid of the air tanks. The starter motor will come with a 2 stage manual
starter box. The 2 stages will limit the amp draw during start up. Everything else will be controlled by me as always. I have 3 Oly's and love them.

Guys, does anyone have the front cover (cowl) for the Olympus? my engine doesnt have it.

I installed a JJ1800 starter on my AMT Olympus and burned 2 starter motors at first 2 start attempts (with 7.4V 2S Lipo) - both reached to about 10K RPM on gas and not more - and this wasnt enough to have the ECU start spooling up the pump.

1. in what RPM / EGT does the ECU start to spool up the pump?
2. which kind of starter motors are you guys using with good success? JJ1800 (Mabuchi RS-380-5025) just doesnt seem to have the power needed to spin the Olympus.

Can anyone advise which motor exists inside an Olympus fuel pump? mine is a Graupner Speed 400 7.2V "Best.-Nr.1794" and it doesnt seem to be pumping enough fuel into the thirsty Olympus, as i keep getting "RPM LOW ERROR" on startup.

Well, after burning 2 Mabuchi SPEED 400 brushed starter motors, i came up with this solution, and with the help of my trusty friend Rafi on the mill, check out the results = the first ever AMT with Brushless starter! :D
this easily spins the Olympus up to 16K on 3S Lipo.

So I had 3 AMT 180 converted to electric start, I used the JetJoe 1800 electric starter, I connected it to my AMT Air Start box, I set it up so that I used my own emblical cord from RadioShak, I set the box up so when it would pop the air start relay inside the Box it would actuly power own a Castel Creation 20amp EBC running off a 3s lipo, I did it this way becosue the EBC is adjustable by .2 volts and I would always get the same power even if the lipo was fresh off the charger, I think I settled on 6.8V as it could spin the turbine up but it was not to hard on the bendex as the nut on the nose of the turbine is not really sutted for it and at the end of the day that is what coused me to stop doing it.

I actuly sold all my AMT stuff to some guys wanting to get into turbines cheap, but some how found my self with a almost brand new AMT 450 which is now in my Velox XL wateing for the ground to hard up.

I settled on useing a pancake 5 gallon air compressor/tank from HarbborFreight for $98. This has the power to qucily air start the 450 2 times with air avaible to cool down the motor after landing off of one complet fill up. If I fly more than 2 times I just plug the compressor into a power inveted to the battery of my van to refill it.

Ohh ya, I got 2 AMT 180 from this site for $450 each! ready to go, then got the 3rd inside a CAI Razor / AMT180 with Start box for $800! and Now I got this monster AMT 450 at a killer price, I do love my Kingtecks but for a guy who wants to get a bigger turbine and not so worried about the air compress then there great, but most want the newest lightest most power motors so you pay to play I guess.

Yes the JJ1800 starter works fine on the 180, but for the 450 (Olympus) which i have its simply not enough to spin all that mass.
Little brushless Ammo motor works fine though - and the cool thing is - i can actually connect the ESC to the receiver and start it up from my radio (with ability to control speed).
i will connect the glow plug to a brushed ESC and that way i can start the engine from my radio
I think i invented a new start mode, its not auto start and it not manual start its "RC Start". :D:D:D

How did you attach the bendex?

Is that the jet Joe 1800 motor housing?

I like the thought of using your TX to control the motor

What size battery are you using for your turbine?

Im using a 3s life pack. It's odd as my 180s use 2s lipo
