My Avanti has had 4 different engines in it, P20, K45G2, K30G2 and finally the X45, which has been in there for nearly 4 years! The K45G2 was a very heavy engine and it would be very heavy with a K65!

The K65 is similar in size to the X60

The X60 is the same length as the X45 but a little bigger in diameter. It would be too much for the small Avanti.

Yea, I wouldn't want the residual thrust. This thread is old enough that anyone contemplating over a P20 was nuts, then 45 became the norm. I personally wouldn't fly it on anything bigger than a 45 but I'd never get it down and stopped at my field if it was faster and heavier or had more residual thrust.

The little Avanti is a bit more fragile than full glass or even foam airplanes. I like to keep it light and watch the speed.

Im going x45 not sure if I want light or compact version.
Are the JP 50mm brakes the best option? I have the 75mm and man they suck. Buts thats on a flash that needs to land fast this thing should fly similar to my foam version.

BTW I ordered the grumania pipe as I want dual walled.

I am building another one. I will use X45 Light, HAB single wall pipe and mounting kit. (I have a Gumania pipe and its 2-1/2 times heavier than HAB.)
I found a new source of wheels from RC Castle. LD Technology. They look like JP wheels but the brake wires plug in the same as Electron does. And they costs 40% less than JPs.

you will most probably need to add weight aft, going for the heavier pipe is not at all a bad idea. i have the K-30 and grumania pipe in mine and need to remove 230 gr. from the front (according to Xicoy CG device) or add some weight far aft to achieve the required CG at 145mm....

I have a single wall Grumania pipe in mine and this picture shows where my two batteries now. I have now moved the red 2s 2200ma LiPo to over the tank and it takes off in 20 metres and lands super slow. Black line is the CG

I do believe you are correct. I had to add 50g of lead to the tail. However, it was still lighter than using the double walled pipe.
I like the HAB pipe + their G10 mounts, because the installation is so easy.
I use Grumania pipes too, they are great.

Yes, battery location is above the tank on mine, your G.G. line looks correct.

Can this jet use 55mm rear wheels? If so will a bigger nose wheel fit in the front strut or can I move the strut down off the pin a bit to get the AOA correct? Id like to use the electron brakes but the only make 55mm as the smallest.

Pleased to say that i have maiden my Mini Avanti last Saturday. i had added 50 Gr lead aft and programmed all throws as per manual. What i can say is woooow. What a nice docile jet CG was spot on and jet tracks perfectly.... i programmed crow and used it for landing. simply perfect.
i had a stuck nose gear for the first landing and still i was able to land on the mains and keep the nose straight until speed was bled and i came to a stop with not even a scratch on the doors that remained open.
after fixing the nose gear problem, second flight was even better with some maneuvers loops rolls, slow roll, four point roll, split S....this jet handles like a big pattern ship...
flew 5 minutes (timer) and landed with half tank full. i can easily go for 7 minute flights and have plenty fuel left...

I use 45mm JP wheels at the rear, 40mm at the front. I want the nose pointing a bit lower on the ground. Beware, my M Avanti take off and land on asphalt.

If larger wheel size is used, it certainly help in grass field but, if the pin in the strut bend a little, the landing gear might stuck in the fuselage.

I got a set of 56mm xicoy wheels and brakes, stock wheels are 50mm so they will be a little bigger and may need to adjust nose strut a little.
I ended up get the xicoy 45 finally I have high expectations.

Hey Guys, I am having issues rotating off grass with my Mini Avanti, powered via KT K45. I believe it to be the small wheels. I have 50mm for rears with brakes and 46mm on the front. What is the largest nose wheel that can be put on the stock nose strut? It appears to be no more than 50mm but maybe 55mm will fit with alteration? I read somewhere on this thread where someone mentioned altering the front strut but no details of what they did. I appreciate any help.

I have been flying my Mini Avanti for many years now with a X45 in it, and am still using the original retracts and wheels. I did put some 3mm ply under the front retract to raise the nose slightly and always use 10 degrees of flap for take-off, which makes a huge difference in take-off distance off grass. My jet had a K45 G2 engine in it at one stage, which made it quite a heavy jet. I estimate that I lost 800gms of weight by installing the X45! Also, the fuel tank sits slightly ahead of the CG, so this will create a forward CG when full, so maybe balance with zero fuel towards the rear most CG position. I do not use a header tank, just a felt clunk, so it's possible that a header tank may be forward of the main tank compounding the nose heaviness

Hey Aussie, really appreciate the reply! Yeah I had a feeling it might be the weight. I am currently at 5.58kg AUW. I also do have a header tank that holds about 3.5oz of fuel. My CG was done with an empty tank, gear down and it balances right at the book CG of 145mm. I also had to add 6.5oz of weight inside the fuse towards the rear in order to get it to balance at that CG. What do you recommend I shoot for in regards to farthest CG as I didn't see a +/- from 145mm? I am also looking into extending the nose gear height as I also think when it starts to accelerate I am getting a bit of nose gear collapse even though these are JP struts and seem to be pretty tight in regards to up/down.

Can you please post some pictures of your installation? For starters,,you can mount the batteries over the tank and remove the lead. It's up to you whether you remove the header tank or try and mount it over the main tank as well. Also, I don't use the cockpit tub, just have a pilot sitting on a support. This allows room into the canopy for other staff. I think mine weights 4.2kg and my cg is 150mm back.

Good Stuff Aussie1, that's certainly a great combination you have there. I can recall when we use to run PST-600's, similar power levels to an X45 but so much more weight, and long spool times...I guess that's progress.

Yeah, I had a couple of those PST engines, great little turbines! The X45 is also great because it will still power most 60 size jets, but at a reduced take-off weight.
