Dream shop done...
 

The table discussion motivated me to finish up my shop. Well, wife and kids in Maui really motivated me... but whatever.. We moved last summer. I went from a single garage stall to a 26x28' space solely dedicated to building things. I dragged my feet on my compressor and dust collector. Really wanted to put them under the garage in the crawl space, but finally gave up and mounted them to the wall. I did buy one of those rapid air systems to run lines to other parts of the shop, and I want to put in a TV. I have two more large planes in a storage unit, that I need to bring over, might build a few more wall racks. I bought a small mig welder to build one of the racks, need to find more things to build with it.

I re-did the light fixtures and doubled up on them. Still fluorescents, but dramatically brighter than what was there. 60K BTU hot dawg heater with nest thermostat... this way I can get it going on my way home from work, or in the house ;-) All the dust creating tools are plumbed into the dust collector, and I have a hose that I can move to the benches if I run the big table saw. Epoxy floor was already there. If you plan on putting one on your floor, do not use the speckle stuff! If I drop a screw, its gone...really hard to find things once they land on that stuff.

Looking good. Photo 6 "Byrnes 4" Table Saw" simply the best. I kick my self for not getting mine sooner.

Not sure if you're concerned, but I've heard with your garage door, if one of the glass panels is knocked out near the red cord you have hanging (for your garage door opener), might be easy garage access for a mean person... (Picture 14)

Also, how do you like your LMS mini mill? I have been kicking around getting one for a while.. Thanks!

what kinda dream shop is this?

On the ceiling above the garage doors (I have two) I built a hanging shelf that can hold a full sheets of 4X8 if needed but use it for the stuff I don't use often. On each side of both of these above the doors I have mounted 4 more two bulb flouresents big difference when the doors are down.

Look above that door when its open I bet there is at lease 18 inches of unused storage space.

Still looks like there is lots of stuff sitting on the floor needing a place to store. Good luck arranging everything. Nice compressor Dewalt isn't it? I have the earlier version that is laying down I like the 225 psi. I set my output for 120 psi for the shop and I bought a 12 gallon portable tank I hook into the shop lines with a quick disconnect. This gives me extra capacity and the ability to unhook it and take it out to fill a tire or blow something off in the yard.

Hey Mongo! Long time no talk. I do have a fridge within stumbling distance full of beer and a SONOS system for music. TV is on the way. Stripper pole.... not in this life time brother...

I knew I would get some good tips, thanks for the observations. The disengage rope being a break in risk would have never crossed my mind. I had the over the garage door storage racks at my old house. Even put in the silent side operating garage door openers for better access. These are 12' ceilings, be tough to put stuff up there, but may resort to that as we collect junk. I just feel dumb keeping a storage unit when I have the space here, hopefully get it figured out over Christmas break.

I don't think you want to take my advice on purchasing a mill! It works well for a novice. I like the price, and the little machine shop has good support.

Yes Erik, it is getting a tail amputation and graft soon... :-( The Kolm 135 is way too much power for this plane, it lifted off in ten feet like a lightly loaded 3D plane. (it weighs right at 50) It was airborne way before it was going fast enough for the control surfaces to be effective... Pretty tough to see that much work last around five seconds. But the front end is still pristine, and thats where all the fabrication was, it will fly again.

Looks great Mike, I'd love to have even a portion of all those nifty tools...

Thanks Chris, I bet you're partial to the camo jet huh??? :cool: It's a jerry bates sea fury with moki 250. I didn't build it.

Maybe a little, haha! I love the Sea Fury, one day I want to build a nice scale one. What's the size of it?

I think its 102" Guy who built it did an amazing job, The guy who tried to fly it (me) wasn't ready for the torque and I clipped a PVC pipe with the wing and ripped it off ;-( Its repaired and should fly this spring. I bought a TF mustang and put a bigger motor in it and have been practicing take-offs and landings right and left… I got it figured out now, just chose the wrong plane to find out I needed more experience with the warbirds.

Oh man that stinks! Hopefully the repairs weren't too bad. Warbird practice is always good.

What is the rack by the window with the jets made from? Looks like 4x4 posts and some wooden dowels. I'm needing to make a rack as well and that looks simple and effective.

Its just 4x4's with 1" hardwood dowels. make sure you get hardwood… Ideally, 1.5" dowels would probably allow you to hang most planes. I'm skeptical about the 1" stuff, planning on redoing this rack in metal. 1.5" would have been better, but home depot didn't have them. Do not use fir!

Thanks for the info. Is it pretty sturdy as is? I was thinking maybe 1" steel pipe.

Much better idea. Maybe make a jig or if you have a drill press, angle the deck so it does a slight angle. I think the weight of the plane and pipe will compress the wood a tiny bit and it will flatten out. Plus, you'd rather a plane roll up against the wall than off the rack!
