A Tale of Two Drakens. Airworld J-35 Draken builds
 

Airworld recently released their newest scale jet, the SAAB J-35 Draken. It looks really sinister, ugly, crude... Very Cold War era.... Yet were Mach 1+ jets, and with the double delta, very good flying. I had been looking for a scale jet project, and this rung the bell.

I'm not a fan of the scheme they have in their site, but the plane looks correct, and those that know Airworld... It will fly well.

Back Story
A few years ago, I started branching out from the all-consuming world of IMAC and aerobatic airplanes, and got into jets. My first jet was a 1/4.5 Hawk. It flew great and looked awesome in the air, but was limited on the fields I could fly at. I wanted something I could really just go fly the crap out of. Simple, low maintenance, and would do everything I could imagine, and do it well. That wound up being my 2.5m Futura... Love this plane. BUT, I didn't get into jets to fly sport jets... I fact I really am not much of a sport jet fan at all. Flying the Futura the last 2 years... I do like some of them.

That being said, I've had my eye on a few scale jets for some time. I almost pulled the trigger on an Airworld F100, F104... But held off, back and fourth for months. A good buddy of mine called all excited about the Airworld Draken... That was it. We pulled the trigger.

They are on order, and should be here mid this year.

The kit is all composite of course, the gear is electric... And has a nose wheel mains, and even the tail wheel. Pretty cool. Drop tanks included as well.


Ours will also have the full cockpits, light systems... I'll need some help from you guys on an LED flame ring.


These will will be built the same:
JR28x, XBus servos, and 180-200 sized turbines.

These will ill be the first builds in my new shop. No more painting outside. Lol.

I believe that is the old liebtrau kit. Been around along time. I suspect airworld bought the molds

I work for the Volvo group and have been in Gothenburg quite a bit. On one of our outings took us to the Cold War bunkers, and Drakens were there... Pretty incredible aircraft.

Thank you for the kind words.

The Draken is a very nice handling jet. Like most delta's however, it's all AOA during the landing phase. As a result, much of the underside of the wing and fuselage are subject to even the minor disturbances, particularly in the roll axis!
Now that competition rules have relaxed the gyro ban, I have installed the Power Box Igyro 3e. Should be very stable this season, with even greater handling in all areas of performance! Most importantly in the roll axis at the slow landing speeds we operate.

I have gone so far as to get a quote on this jet from Gotz Vogelsang. When funds permit I may go for it as I absolutely love the plane and I would like to fly a delta. I would love to know if Airworld improved on the Liebtrau kit, molds are one thing it could be quite different internally.
Looking forward to following your build and seeing how it all goes together. With that nice new shop you have no excuse to keep us all waiting, Ha!

I have my Airworld Draken kit now from Vogelsang. Does anyone know of a build thread for this kit? I'd love some plans. The kit only comes with pictures of the exterior build details. There are a lot of formers which need placing.

Gotz and I changed direction and decided to do two Airworld ME262's instead.

Ah, fantastic. I have the old Airworld ME262 kit for EDF. Did you ever find a Draken build thread, even if it is not in english?

Hi Husarfreak,

Frank Alvarez, he posted a few post earlier did a build thread of the Saab Draken! Ask him, he sure can help!

I will pick up a Draken kit on Jetpower fair from Airworld which i will build for a good friend. Power will be a German turbine of 250 class, i also ad a chute system from Details4Scale and some other scale features.

So if You want we can share our ideas as we go along :)
