LDS Turbinator 44 build

3 Attachment(s)
Hi all...It finally arrived today ! My short kit for the 83% Turbinator. Designed for the Wren 44 but I will be using the Kingtech K45G. Dealing with Bob at Laser Design Services has been a pleasure ! As you can see from the photos, everything arrived undamaged due to the great attention to packing. The wood quality is excellent...I am very happy with this purchase. Cant wait to start this build, however, I have some parts sorting to do, as well as ordering some sticks and sheets. After a quick review of the plans, this kit is a little larger than I expected ! I hope I can nail the target weight because I plan to glass it with 3/4 oz cloth, epoxy primer, and military paint scheme w/ panel lines and rivets....kind of a sport scale.

Is this the Mormon version?

Bad joke sorry. lol.

scootergenie 09-24-2016 06:18 PM

You know, I tried to post a build thread for the benefit of other members who might be interested, and I get a third grade joke for a reply...thanks for the welcome guys.....I'm done with this kiddie forum. And someone asked " where have all the builders gone ?".......stupid question.

highhorse 09-24-2016 07:09 PM

Goodness. It wasn't even a derogatory joke! LDS..."Latter Day Saints". Kinda funny, actually, and I don't think my Mormon buds would be offended at all. PLUS, Andy apologized.

I've seen plenty of stupid/offensive posts here, but IMO this just isn't one of them and I hope Andy doesn't lose any sleep over it.

Scootergenie, Don't be so sensitive, I've taken a beating on these forums, it's kind of like dealing with people in real life, just much worse. Much is lost in the type, so I've found it best to just let most of it go and some good info comes by now and then!

On your project that is a cool idea, I've built 3 kits from LDS, Ziroli Panther, JetMach Sport and the JetMach Super Sport. I Monokoted the Sport and used PPG on the Super Sport. I went with the Alaska Camo on the Super Sport.

Here is how my Super Sport looked Aug 2, 2016:

Took these this morning, I kind of don't want to add the decals because it's so pretty! lol!

Just need to finish the install and she is ready!

I will be watching your build, so keep it going!

lol, no hard feelings. You'll love the Kingtech btw.

scootergenie 09-25-2016 01:21 PM

do you own a kingtech Andy ?

SECRET AGENT 09-25-2016 05:12 PM

Scootergenie, finally an actual build thread and not jusy an assembly. Looking forward to it, don't leave out any details, some of us enjoy a good build!

Viper1GJ 09-25-2016 05:55 PM

Scooter, proceed with the build. A few of us out here still build and enjoy following build threads. Post lots of photos if you can. I did a scratch build thread last year and got very few comments but it was fun anyway. Gary

jlmaviation 09-26-2016 06:45 AM

I want to see this build thread also. I looked at this Turbinator size and I like it. I may give LDS a call and order one. So please proceed with details. Thanks.

Yes, I have owned several. Currently I have two K210s. I have owned a K80 and two K170s. I also own several JetCats, a Behotec 180 Gold and a Jet Central Cheeta.

All are great engines.

Good luck on your build and thanks for sharing the information. It takes a lot of time and effort to do these threads and many people here appreciate them.

Andy

Andy, that's an impressive list of turbines you have there ! O.K.... The first order of business is to build the fuselage crutch. The sticks were a little oversized so I buzzed them on the table saw. Next, I'll set up my build table and get to it.http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2182978http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2182979http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2182980http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2182981

Thanks Scott!

Scootergenie, you are doing a very detailed build, thanks! Keep it going, I'm following along...

The crutch is almost completed...now working on the fuse sides. I have found a few problems with the formers. F4 and F6 were cut too narrow. also, F1 slots were 3/8" and all the rest of the formers were cut for 1/2". In the fuselage sides, the alignment dowel holes are spaced at 3/8" but the crutch is built with 1/2" sticks, so I'll have to re drill the dowel holes to line up with the crutch. Now, keep in mind that the original size plan shows a 1/2" crutch, but the reduced plan makes the crutch 3/8". But....the formers are notched for 1/2" ! except for F1 which was notched for 3/8"......I think LDS lost a few details when reducing the plans. For a true builder, these things are minor, and can be overcome. However, I could not recommend this cut kit to anyone except an experienced builder. Just hope I don't have these kind of problems when I get into the wing. The overall quality of the wood is good, and the parts count is there. All the laser cutting is crisp and clean. The plan copy leaves a little to be desired though. It is blurry and some of the notes are not legible. If you order this kit from LDS, make sure you address some of these problems.....it would just make the build go a lot faster if you don't have to correct problems. Still, Everyone who's built this size says it's a great flyer ! So I press on !

Cool project.. Thanks for taking the time and sharing.

I think a lot of people don't realise just how much time and effort is required to put together a good build thread. It is actually quite a bit of work.

scootergenie 09-28-2016 07:35 PM

Thanks Roger for the kind words. It makes all the work worth it ! I sanded the fuselage sides tonight, and glued in the aft floor on the crutch. tomorrow I'll be cutting dowels.

jofunk 09-29-2016 03:10 PM

"Yeah" a builder. Keep at it. Before you know it you'll have an airplane. The pictures really make the thread. You will also have them for posterity. I have a lot of respect for people who build planes that don't look like planes when you open the box.

LordSirOb 09-29-2016 03:44 PM

I am thinking about building one of these. Is there a material list for the types and quantities of wood needed to complete the plane (e.g., balsa sticks and sheets, basswood/hardwood, etc.), or is the full size material list OK? Additionally, what kind of down-thrust would be needed for a K60G? Has anyone moved the wing back a bit to minimize lead needed in the nose to balance? And one more question (for now), what retracts would go well with the 83% turbinator?

Scott Todd 09-29-2016 04:06 PM

I used the Eflite 120 electric retracts for my 83% Turbinator. I have used them on other 60 size warbirds and the Hangar9 B-25. I have been real pleased with them. The struts are Robart but Io don't know which ones. I used the HK brakes and wheels. Those have also worked really well, especially for $50.

The gear and brakes is one of the reasons I choose the 83%. I was thinking budget for my first jet in case I stuffed it.
