Fly Eagle Jets Hawk 2.66m Build

Well its time again for a new build thread. If you are like me I love to watch Jets move from start to finish. This thread is unique in that there is history behind this brand of Hawk. I purchase the FEJ Hawk 2.66m in the Yellow/Black Color. This first post will provide a list of items that I will be installing in the Hawk. As this build thread begins I ask that please keep this one clean and helpful for not just for me but for others that may end up purchasing this size or similar. As always My goal is to have other help me identify items that I could do better or different. So enough said here is a list of items that will be used in the Hawk:

As we wait patently until I get back to start the build. It looks like I will be going with a JC Rhino. Also I had made a jig to get exact measurements for the Xicoy CG Machine. This will be the first thing I do so that for those that get this model and size will have those numbers if wanted. Stay toned for the start.

Do you recommend free weights or something like crossfit? ;)

Joe,

Nice to see that you are doing a build on the FEJ Hawk and doing it in the yellow and black, which I believe is a very cool scheme. Would it be possible to get some detailed photos of the insides (fuse, wings, etc) showing the construction on how its all put together. I would like to see this since I'm also thinking of a FEJ. Looking forward to following your build.

Robert

Thanks and yes its neutral to me as I have never owned a FEJ and I know that others have had not so good luck with them in any shape or form. Just know when I get back home to start the build I will be adding a lot of pictures as i build it.

mikes68charger 03-22-2017 12:06 PM

This is great, I love build threads also.

I will say as I own several FEJ jests, Its worth the effort to cut a Square 1in from the root, about 1in wider than the rod that goes into the elevator. This is so you can verifier and strengthen the attachment point. Once you add some hysal to this critical part, then take balsa, and make tabs on all 4 sides, so the part you cut out will lay perfectly level, then Hysal it back in, if you use the super thin diamond cut off wheel from lows it will be a very small seem around the repair area.

Post pics Im excited.

Okay well Here we go! Here are just a few pictures. Its late and I have been flying all day so I got watch pictures I could. If you don't see pictures that you are looking for please let me know and I will take them. First thoughts are the quality is not bad. It looks very nicely built. Now I see some areas that I know I will need to work on but nothing major.

Thanks for the pictures.

Joe, I see some things that are typical to fej, some bad glue joints, they have cut too much from bulkheads that will cause them to crack. The biggest issue with this particular jet is seeing how the bracket is built into the stab. This was the major failure point before, plus seeing inside the wings and stabs checking glue joints. Not trying to be negative but you wanted this type of info, the honeycomb skin they used wasn't the problem it was them using it for bulkheads and ribs. People seeing new materials for the skin is the wrong way to look, they have changed that but all the other issues are still there. I try to bring that up with folks but they cant see past the honeycomb. These were things I didn't see until I had built other kits with correct layups. You're were I was six years ago, I have no doubt it can be built and flown successfully its just going to take some beef up and checking internals.

LimitDwn 04-06-2017 09:19 AM

Thanks, for the pictures Joe, You had mentioned that there are a few things that you think need attention, would it be possible to get before and after pictures of the areas that need this extra work?

Thanks,
Robert

GULDUKAT 04-06-2017 09:28 AM

Joe,

Is this a brand new kit that you will be assembling or is this a used kit (factory disassembled from a unit they put together?)

Chet

This is how I know they haven't changed, not sure whats even going on here, is this for holding the pipe or just bad cutting. Plus the gear ply mount is split and will need to be fixed or the gear will tear out on the first hard bump.
Joe just be be careful, make the repairs and make sure you check the inside of the wings and the stabs. The aluminum cross beam on the stabs needs to extend almost halfway into the stab, the old ones didnt go in very far and would come apart in flight. I would be curious to see how the metal crossbeam is connected to the stab itself as well.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2208696 this looks like the bulkhead next to the stab mount, which should be beefy for strength but you can see they cut too much from it and some areas are very thin. Make some ply bracing to beef up the thin areas.
