Skymaster T33, Cougar or BAE Hawk
Ok, need everyone's thoughts and opinions on my next jet. In consideration are the Skymaster T-33, Cougar and the BAE Hawk (short nose). Power will be a Kingtech 140G2 (a new spare engine I already have). This will just be a fun weekend plane. So not worried about winning any scale awards or such. Flying off a 500' paved runway.
What are the pro's and con's of each model? |
I've had the cougar for the last 6-7 years brilliant aeroplane , lovely to fly , looks the part and Is very easy to rig at the flying field only annoying part is the scale cockpit to remove if you ever need to do any maintenance underneath is, but it's still not a difficult job. Toby |
T33 or cougar. The hawk is done to death. The t33 and cougar arent seen anywhere near as often
|
I own all three - the Cougar is your best choice given the engine you have.

Had the T1 Hawk and I'm currently flying the t33 with a K120 and a Cougar with a K140g1. All are great flying jets. T33 with the tanks has a great presence in the air. Cougar also has a distinct look in the air. Both fly great. Cougar will fly slower than the T33. Neither are fast jets. Both do very nice aerobatics.

I have SM Hawk T1 powered by JetCat P-140rxi, but installed in tail, very good flying bird |
Thanks to everyone for their insights and info.

Other than how well and easy it flies, the Cougar is stupid easy to operate. Travels on its wheels, so no need for a cradle or anythng fancy on your vehicle. Only one cable per wing to connect, and one screw per wing. I can get it ready to fly while fueling (and I'm done before it is full). Even checking the retracts is easy, just pick it up by the nose while it rests on the skid bump at the tail
Also, agree that the cockpit is a PITA, but, you almost never have to remove it, most work can be done through the gear doors (huge hole) Two thing where the cougar sucks and the hawk truly excels are: Knife edge and ground handling. The cougar does not hold a knife edge (enough for perfect point rolls) and it is a handful on cross wind ground handling If you just want a great flier that is super easy to operate, the cougar is your ticket... I do love the T33 though... :) |
Yeah what Jack said. I have the hawk and the cougar. If you are into aerobatics, go the hawk. If easy to operate is your preference, go the cougar. I had to reinforce my hawk a lot. Not sure if the new versions are stiffer....they might well be different construction now. |
