3D replica of your turbine for use during build

I’ve seen these used in multiple build series. With all the 3D printing, can someone point me in the right direction for obtaining one of these?

Do you have a printer? There are a few free designs available on Thingiverse.com though they are primarily for the smaller engines that I have seen.

K30/K45: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3907908

X45: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3846262

P20: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1795595

Actually I just realized those are all made by Henke, believe he posts here, but anyway I've never come across any replicas for larger engines.

What turbine are you looking for, I have a large library of CAD models I have done over the yrs. AMT, Jetcat, BF, Wren, Jakadofsky

Just did the SPT-10 RX on the weekend and finishing off the SPT-15 RX in the coming days.

Jakadofsky Pro 5000 would be very handy.

I could used a K100TP...while I’m waiting for them to make the G4 version ;) but it too much for my limited 3D modelling knowledge....

Wow .. Halcyon .. these are magnificent! Would love to have a link to the designs if you are willing to share them.

Short of such a beautiful model of the entire turbine, I've fabbed some pipe alignment tools from plywood rings and basswood sticks ... one ring slides over the tailcone, and has spacers that connect it to a ring that just fits into the thrust tube. This is intended only to properly position the pipe, assuming the turbine is already mounted. That would be another good 3d printing project .. less functional than a replica of the entire motor .. but much simpler to design. At the time I did these, I did not have a 3d printer .. since I do now, that's how I'd make the next one!

thanks Mike! I will scale the K45 for my larger turbines....

More than welcome I will try and get some more up over the coming days.

They are just surface models yet the mounting holes are on the money, the "exact" model dimensions could be a a mm or two out :-)

I had proposed a 3d printing forum here. Hope it gets done

patrnflyr 07-12-2020 05:44 AM

Thank you all for your responses. I have a local friend who’s stepped in and offered to “build” me one. Thanks Ron S.

I tried growing the K45 files from Thingiverse that Auburn located. The turbine is pretty small, so it easily fits into my printer. I normally grow everything from ABS, and try to grow with minimal supports. But how the STL file was arranged, it was going to be difficult to grow, so I had some file manipulations to do. Since I could not edit the STL file without crashing my computer (like cut in half for example), I ran the STL file thru an IGES translator, so I had a solid body to manipulate. Then I was able to create 2 separate files - for an upper and lower half. Those 2 files were then used to create new STL files. The parts were grown (with no supports) and turned out reasonably well. One would need some filling/sanding if you wanted to make it into a pretty display model, but one could... Otherwise it should serve its purpose.:)

Auburn02 07-14-2020 06:46 AM

Cool! How big did you scale it up and how much infill did you use?

Ron S 07-14-2020 10:33 AM

I did not scale it up. I left it at the scale the thingiverse designer built it to. Otherwise it would not make sense to advertise it as a specific turbine make.

Also, as the designer had laid it out, the entire model is hollow. The surface is about .1” thickness (approx). The tailpipe exit is open. So I guess one could use it as a beer mug too. :-)

Frankly that is not how I would have designed it , but we all can do things differently. 🙂

edit: I should also point out, if you have access to an SLS or SLA machine, no supports would be needed- they are inherent with the process, so you could grow it as one piece, as per the thingiverse STL file.

Auburn02 07-14-2020 12:58 PM

Ah my mistake, when you said you "grew" it I thought you meant you increased the size. I'm not down with all the 3D printing lingo. :D

There was another poster who planned to scale these up to closely (but not perfectly) replicate larger engines.

sidgates 07-14-2020 08:31 PM

I tried to download the X45 and keep getting a 404 error. Has anyone else been successfu? Also I could use files for the Merlin 100XBL.
