1:5.5 Mig 29 Super Scale Interest

Kicking the idea around of making a competition quality ARF and would like to see how much interest is out there since the CARF option is dead and doesn't fit correctly...
Length: 124"
Engines: 2x 100-160
How many of you would be very interested in this ARF?

Halcyon66 10-26-2020 12:44 PM

Would build one and then see what happens, the CARF is not dead per se it just had way too many issues that were never addressed from the start. CARF is the master of walking away from models once they get enough $$ in to start the next one.

I heard a rumor that CARF may revive that old mold into a modern ARF, but that was two years ago and I haven’t seen or heard a peep since.

I've always wanted to build a decent MiG-29 kit. Something else always seems to get ahead in my line though... :)

If you decide to do this, just to let you know the Pima Air Museum in Tucson has a MiG-29 you could use to get dimensions. Although they have an "incorrect" canopy...

yeahbaby 10-26-2020 05:05 PM

A rack of parts to support the bird would be nice.

Halcyon66 10-26-2020 11:21 PM

1/4 scale UB, go big or go home

I have a friend that started a 1:4 scale mig-29 and did so much work on it but for some reason,, family kids change by wife to stop playing with toys,, he stopped and never got back to hobby, I think it’s time to ask him what he is going to do with, maybe I’m going to finish it up

Ceeray 10-27-2020 09:35 AM

Too big models sell worse compared to more transportable.. 3m lenght still shortens to 2.5m when nosecone and tail surface removed, which is not too bad. Go for it!

Spencer K 10-27-2020 04:21 PM

The beauty is it will transport on its gear, easy! Nose cone will shorten the fuse big time and they sure seem to fly well. Andreas at Carf told me he has no interest in bringing it back- said too much work and would have to start from scratch...
1/4 scale- wow that’s a monster. It seems that planes in 260-320N requirement is a sweet spot of weight, transportability and flight characteristics.

Gotcha. He is the one who told me it may be coming when I was inquiring about gear parts for the original kit, but lots has changed since then for sure.

Spencer ive been waiting for someone to produce such a machine, maybe Skymaster. Large, super scale Mig 29 at 1/5.5 or 1/5 (3m/3.4m) would be so good, like the Rusjet Mig. For me to pull the trigger it would have to be proven, well engineered, and perfectly accurate. The CARF Mig is so accurate, it’s just a headache to build. Dream big buddy. Good on you.

Ceeray 10-28-2020 06:42 AM

European 25kg weight limit should also be considered..

Halcyon66 10-28-2020 01:35 PM

Mate if you want to do anything like this make it spot on, make a small production run and not be concerned with the weight.

If you listen to too many people you will end up with 50 different opinions and never get anything done. Make what YOU want, there will be buyers.

And provide a stock or replacement parts primarily for gear / wheels and brakes

Lavi here is my Skymaster F18. Yes it is superscale 🖕🏼

RC_MAN 10-29-2020 04:12 PM

I would be interested if the price was less than 10K

Chris Nicastro 10-29-2020 05:35 PM

I wish I took better photos of the RusJet Mig 29 kit I had because the molded detail was the best I’ve ever seen. The rivets, each type, location, size and count was spot on. It was just gorgeous. I regret selling it that’s for sure but a larger well thought out kit with that level of detail will absolutely sell.
Upon very close inspection I found traces of blue silicone bits in some panel lines so he must have made fairly hard durometer silicone molds. The panel lines and surfaces looked clean and sharp. It was a master class in molding techniques.
The original model maker worked for Mig and made the model for their sales booth at air shows. Last I heard he had the Mig 35 model ready and the price was about $10K but this was several years ago.

I have a new CARF Mig 29 and Matrix retracts and it’s not as nice as the RusJet Mig 29 was, just to give some comparison or context. Also, the RusJet model was much smaller than the CARF is and it was going to be heavy and complicated. The CARF Mig has more room but an even larger version would offer much more room and ease of installation.

If you build it they will come...

Hey Chris. Mate are you sure you had a Rusjet Mig? Over 3M long? I contacted RusJet last year to see if they would supply me a kit but they said they only make the models for themselves and will never sell them or supply anyone. If yours was definitely a RusJet Mig I’m keen to hear some more details.
Cheers
Levi

Are u sure u know your bug ???
Its a nice looking F-18 no doubt but I’d hardly say it super scale .
An obvious hint .... take a close look at your landing gear ... for a start . I can go all day about it if you like ..

Lavi go for your life, pick it to pieces. But if you’re talking LG make sure you know the difference between a RAAF F18A and an F18C. And while you’re at it if you’re such an expert, post a photo of the superscale jets you own, you’ve built, and painted, and that you fly regularly.
You are one of these nameless RCU pelicans that always has something negative to say.

lavi rider 10-30-2020 01:30 AM

You’re on bud , still same to u .

Skygate hawk on the right , Airworld 1/4 hawk on the left .... dear Waggie....

lavi rider 10-30-2020 01:48 AM

So I guess u take it back now ...... right ?
So
The landing gear on your F-18 being it A-C or what ever u choose won’t matter because now I know u don’t know your scale subject that much for a fact .

u only addressed the tow bar that is not installed on foreign supplied land operated F-18’s .... right.....?!

But u totally missed that your main landing gear is not the type installed on the F/A-18 C,B,D ....

ill let u check that first ..
A hint .... it’s the E,F Super hornet landing gear !

B assured I know a thing or two about Scale models , design , structure etc .

And a bit about the F-18 in particular plus other full size planes 😉
