Smoke pump help
I'm not good with speed controllers, the pump is a Tamjets smoke pump, it was working just fine with the Futaba radio, now that I've switched to Jeti, first it did not run, I made it run today, I made a program using a sequencer to make the pump to work intermittent, on the first flight today it was working fine on the always on position then I switch to the intermittent position and it started to do so then it went to always on then I couldn't turn it off in any position of the three position switch, landed with it on and turned turned the engine off ( the pump was still on ) I had to unplug the batt to turn the pump off and if I reconnect the batt it runs even with the airplane off.
Is the speed controller cooked? Tks. |
I think your right the ESC is probably toast..
|
Thanks for second that.
Moving in to plan B, since this happened about a year ago with another TJ smoke pump, I will do the same by replacing the ESC with the one on the picture, the first one is working just fine with that HK ESC, I really want see the dashes and dots made out of smoke made by my Boomer and Turbo. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...10f1d2b407.png |
I think that some of the smoke you were seeing at the time of failure was all of the magic blue smoke leaving either your sequencer and/or the ESC.
The switching on and off is hard on the ESC due to the start up surge every time the pump motor starts. You want an ESC that is rated at least 3 or 4 times what the full speed running amps WHILE pumping smoke fluid of the pump. Most ESC can handle 1 or even a few quick starts in a row, but continuous pulsing will cause an over heat since every start is an over current condition. |
Agreed, the moment I switched it to the sequencer is when the ESC gave up also, this is a 20 years old tech.
I have the 20A ESC that you see on the pic and have a 30A on the way, you think these two will work and not burn? Tks. |
This should work no problem, I’m using the same stuff but connecting to older jetcat fuel pump works like champ.just make sure that you reverse the polarity when using jetcat fuel pump

Very nice Sebastian!
Mine is a TJ pump, I used one of the 20A one on another TJ pump and it is working fine, I wasn't sure if these ESCs can handle the abuse from the sequencer. I got a 30A on the way, I will use that one. Tks. |
This is the one I used on the Kincat's smoke pump.

I have my on left slighter and is proportional sometimes I just do very tiny smoke trace or go full blast very easy
|
With the new program on the sequencer I will be able to do dashes and dots in any combo I see fit 😁😁
I also have an old fuel pump that I could use as a smoke pump 🤔 |
I've been using the pump at 100%, next time I use it I will slow it down to 60% using the end travels or ATVs.
I got 5 gallons of smoke fluid to burn next summer 😁 |
Carlos, That's the same setup used when my Tams pump contoller failed. Works well!

That is really good to know, I'll have mine running again this week.
Tks. |

I was thinking, I will test it first at home, if it gets hot then I can move the ESC to the nose wheel well or by one of the intakes to keep it cool when used.
|
Sebastian, does it helps to have the brake on on the ESC?
Mine https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...d3885a290a.jpg Yours https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...110a19e69d.png Manualhttps://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...34e7f6017f.jpg |
Leave the brake off.
The brake is to more quickly slow a heavy prop or if it is in a car that needs braking. The brake will make more heat. If you can connect an amp meter that is capable of recording a peak to see what your pump pulls while starting up with long lines and fluid in it. That is the number that you ESC needs to handle to survive the sequencer. |
Thank you Jeff.
For that I was thinking of adding one of Jeti's MUI. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...d8fd04b08d.png |
