Skymaster Mig 29 Retract question
On my Skymaster Mig29, the spring in my nose strut has gone real soft and it can't support the weight of the nose anymore and I need to replace the spring inside. Does anyone know how to disassemble the nose strut to remove the spring ?
I removed the torque link but still couldn't take the metal rod out. Do I need to remove the C clip on the upper strut assembly for the rod to go out ? |
Just pump some air, not too much so the strut will be able to squad going into the fuselage

Air is no good. What comes in, comes out immediately. I need to open it up and replace the spring.

Your strut does not hold pressure. O ring has failed.
you have to replace o-ring and then fill it with for example silicone shock oil. I had the SM mig-29 for couple of years. Best landing gear ever. |
Strut
Go to the skymaster website , there are videos that show how much air and oil goes in the strut and the procedure to do it.
You have to put the air in when the strut is inverted. There is NO spring. The seal between the inner and outer strut may be bad. If you see oil leaking then the seal is going bad. |
I have my new o ring from ACE hardware store the viton brand and the rc car shocks oil I think that was the 30 , you can use the oil to the air cylinders too .

My question is how do I remove the rod to replace the O ring and the spring. I know what to do, I just don't know how to get the stainless steel rod out. Thanks everybody for your input.
On the main, all I have to do is to remove the link and everything falls out. But on the nose, it doesn't work the same. |
Got any detailed pics of the gear? I'm sure others here who have or had the plane can help you even without pics, but would be helpful all the same for myself and others who may not be familiar but may encounter a similar scenario in the future.

the nose gear is still on the plane. It is hard to get the whole gear out. The picture of the gear can be found on Skymaster website (mig29). There is a C clip (I think, not sure exactly what it is) just on top of the upper assembly. But it doesn't have the holes for to tool. I afraid if I just pull it out, it will break.
