Anyone using a P70 on a Roo II ?

Have a Roo II kit and are planning on utilizing a P70. Wondering if anyone is using this combination and if the P70 has ample power for the Roo II. I am planning to use the P70 (instead of a P80) because of its lower idle/residual thrust ..... for slower landings on a compact field/flying site. Thanks. Bob

It should work perfectly fine. My first roo was powered with a RAM750 (ironically, my new one is as well) but the first one was limited back to 12 pounds thrust. I did have the benefit of a VERY light Kangaroo, only 13 pounds dry, but it was awesome at 12 pounds thrust, I always wondered what it would do at the full 18 pounds hehehe. I am not very familiar at all with Jetcat, but the P70 is noticably lighter, and smaller than the P80, and only 4 pounds less thrust. With the AMA .9:1 power to weight ruling, the P80 would realistically need to be regulated back on the thrust anyway. Unfortunately I'm not sure what the idle thrust of the P70 is, but according to Jetcat's website, the P80 is only .8 at idle, my 750 was a little higher than that and I didn't have any problems landing on a 400 foot runway.

Roos are very flexible aircrafts when it comes to powering them. I have seem them fly with 12, 17 and 28+ lb. turbines. Aside from the .9 to 1 AMA rule, consider that the engine mount sits fairly high on the plane and I have seen a couple of them make uncontrollable hard turns on take-off rolls when throttle is advanced to max too quickly. I know the insatiable speed freaks out there will opt for the 20+ lb. turbines.

Hi Bob!

I am flying my roo with different turbines. Normally it flies with a 95N turbine. We bought a PST J-600 and have not finished our small casa aviojet by now. But to test-fly the turbine :D we put it on the roo and it flies great. Well, not too much power, but very comfortable.
AND: A week ago I talked to Markus Zipperer and Horst Lenerz. Horst flew the P-70 on his HotSpot and it flew extremely fast. Markus said that most of the P-70 have the same thrust as P-80. Go for it, it is a nice and reliable engine.

greetings from germany,

David

Bob We just sold one of the P-70's we have available, to a customer in Florida the week before Superman. He sent me back info that he had flown it on a Roo and it was great, had plenty of power, made less noise than other turbines like the P-80.
He was really happy.
The P-70's are working really well for us.
for more info contact Don at [email protected]

Bob,
I have the P-70 that I got from Don and have 7 outsanding flights on a ROO. Those are my frist Turbine flight.
At first I flew at 1/2 throttle but I am getting more comfortable with it and slowly putting in more power.
I am very happy with the P-70 , it starts flawless evry time , I am glad I waited.[sm=wink.gif]

The Roo II being a delta wing, needs some distance to take off. I had a few of them with P80 and P120 and they flew fine on either. The only thing is that mine took off in about 400 to 450 feet on asphelt with a P120 or P80. They will fly only when they are ready AND the CG is per plans. If you have a short grass runway, you will need to throttle up to 75% before brakes off, track it well then go to 100% power as soon as you can.

The P70 is rated at 18 lbs at best, so assume you get 16 lbs and keep the Roo light and you should be ok with a good well maintained grass field of at least 500-600 feet.

Landing is easy with any of the enignes with the proper procedure. Good luck!

Ehab,

That wasn't my experience with my Roo at all. Off of grass with a RAM750 at 12 pounds thrust (detuned) I was off easily in 300 feet. The trick with the Roo is to make sure the back of the turbine is pushed up about 2 or 3 degrees so it's not driving the nose into the ground (which keeping brakes on will do right from the start) and also make sure the jet sits nose high on the gear anyway.

My take off procedure was simply no brakes, advance to half, once it's rolling go full power and in about 300 feet apply up elevator and it would come off no problem at all.
