BVM F-86/P-120
Anyone have any experience flying an F-86 Sabre with a dialed down P-120? If so did you have any problems with residual thrust or other strange tendencies?
Thanks |
RE: BVM F-86/P-120
I flew a BVM F-86 w/P-80+. Flew it at both 19 lbs. of thrust and the 14 lbs. that BVM recommends. 14 lbs. is definitely all you need. At this thrust setting it has awesome vertical and will go near 200 mph flat level. I assume the P-120 has similar waste thrust to the P-80. This was a concern of mine and was told to use the wing tanks to help with a little drag to slow the plane down. I have seen these aircraft fly with 12 lb turbines and considering flight performance & wing loading, I prefer the lighter 12 lb turbine equipped aircraft. Fuel capacity weight is also a big consideration. Early in the flight you could feel that the plane was definitely heavier. The P-120 dialed down would work, but if you have a smaller turbine that would be my preference.

Tim Redelman and Jon Stotz have been flying the new F86 with a P120. Seen it fly a few times - flies and lands great.

I flew Tim's Sabre at Superman it is detuned and it flies and lands great.

RE: BVM F-86/P-120
I've been flying mine with a P80 and its definately too much power not detuned, but i dont think a 12lb turbine is the way to go either. The perfect engine for this airplane is the P70. I just dont want to pull out a perfectly good motor and sell it and loose around 600 to change to it. If you have a P120 just turn it down, it will fly it great because the F86 will land great at any speed fast or slow. I often think i might be coming in a little to quick and it just sucks to the runway everytime.
GREAT AIRPLANE WITH GREAT FLYING CHARACTERISTICS!!!! Scott |
