Roo Rudder Modification

1 Attachment(s)
I am in the process of building the composite Roo, The only thing that I do not like is the rudder,The shins are wavey not smooth like the rest of the glass work and you can see the frame work thru them.
I was thinking of building a new set and want to know if I could build them with the front flush with the body and wing without changing any of the flight characteristics.Or is this needed for stability? (see pic of the area I am talking about).
Thanks David

Roo Rudder Modification

It's hard to believe that they shipped that kit with skins on the rudders that bad! I would call them and ask about it!

Call Don

Im not sure if that is an optical illusion, but if its not, you should return them for replacement. Call Don Kanak.

Roo Rudder Modification

Nah, that's typical of the composite roo's. They all look like that. If you build new ones DONT taper them down to airfoil shape (flush with wing and fuse), they are designed that way to assist with stability!

Roo vertical fins

Once you paint it and trim it out the waves aren't that noticable.

Roo Rudder "skins"

Mine (composite Roo) were "tight" when I received them, but once in the heated basement this Winter they got somewhat wrinked (not as bad as yours).

Now that they are outside in Northern Ohio, they have mostly vanished! Strange, I just thought that happened to Monokote!

Thanks

I dont think so

I have built three and none of them were wrinkled. I dont know if the pic is distorting the view, but it sure doesnt look good.

skins

It is not a illusion the skins are that wavey,
Thanks Todd for answering the stability question for me, I will call
Don at Planes Plus , if I can't get any better ones I will build some,
I am at the point of putting the control horns in the rudders but I see nowhere to mount them, when holding it up to the light all I see is the 1/4 X 1/4 frame work there is no extra wood to cut a slot into. What have you guys been doing for this area?
thanks David

rudder

Go up until you reach wood and use the wood shim to give correct angle. I knotch into rudder and wood and aeropoxy horn in. I also go inside rudder with a little areopxy and on bottom inside. If you dont find wood to go into like the instructions show then you have a problem.
