RE: Wren 44 help

We removed one motor and set up a simple test stand, no tailpipe, a dubro fuel tank, all direct with short lines right near the motor. All the accessories right there next the stand. On Sunday a friend came over who has lots of wren 54 experience and he was baffled as well. We even tried jetA instead of straight kero. The ONLY way to get the motor to stay running was to keep the gas on, once that was shut down the motor would start to ramp down and cough till it quit.
They are going back to JHH today for them to check out.

Very odd! I assume all the obvious things like battery etc. were top notch?
Can not get my head around that at the moment! I have never had any problem with starting, it just runs!
I understand Wren are hot on this one, but please let me know when you find out what the problem is.
In the mean time i will have a further think and a 'brain storm' with my friend to see what we can think of.

RE: Wren 44 help

Today my friend is coming back over and we will use his propane and valve setup that he uses for his 54 and try that. If that does not work then its off to wren for a checkout.

John, Joe, etc.

We will be leaving here on Wed. for the trip to PHX. Please do NOT send the engines here since there won't be time to do anything with them; we'll evaluate the problem over there and make a determination as to the course of action. Meanwhile, I'll bring a spare.

Am I correct in concluding that only one engine is a problem?

BTW, the ISP has the website back up and running. Ain't technology just "wunnerful"?!

Best regards,
Larry

RE: Wren 44 help

Everyone thankyou for you help!!! problem solved!!! We are dummies here and had the gas and kero lines reversed. I just ran one on the test stand and it was simple to start and runs very sweet. Now its time to put this mess back together and see how they run in the 262. If all goes well there will be a test flight tomorrow!!!

BTW someone in the UK suggested what we were doing wrong. Next time Uncle Joe needs to READ the instructions, oh well, wren was really outstanding helping during this, thankyou.

RE: Wren 44 help

Vincent::: Really glad you got it sorted. I have to confess it was me in the UK that sugested it. I have been scratching my head all day over this one and it was the only thing i could think of. I remembered a similar thing a few years ago with a friend of mine who did exactly the same with a home build. I rang Wren this afternoon and ran it by Mike (the designer) as a possible reason, we were not sure it was the problem but he said he would forward it to you guys to check. It is amazing somtimes how the most obvious things just stare you in the face but you do not see them! I am really pleased it solved the problem and i wish you the best of luck with your 262, i am sure you will love the engines, i love mine, it is the best thing since sliced bread!

All the best Paul

Is it Friday yet!?

RE: Wren 44 help

Thanks paul!!! wren sent us your idea and now i can also say that this is one sweet starting and running motor. We will soon have the mess all back together and will run them and taxi the jet. If that goes well then its off to the field to test fly on Tuesday. The tailpipes "may" be a bit small per wren but we shall see.

Kenny
Lets not wish away the week!! We have lots to do here with this ME-262 yet :)

Well done for admiting the mistake. Some people wouldnt and that would have left a bad taste in peoples mouths about Wren.

Enjoy your engines

Vincent

Beat me by a week or so.

Mine is re fitted with everything and ready to roll..I'l not fly it till the end of the month due to the weather here and access to my favourite air base!

Pictures following of my set up

Good luck with the flight

Mine is 15.5 dead and should go like a rocket! Almost 1:1 Willy would have loved to have two Wren's:D

One, VERY wonderful test flight. No major issues but some getting used to starting up twin turbines. One of the motors seemed to like more gas than the other so there was some adjusting for that etc. Overall, these little 44 monsters run beautiful. I am sure Uncle Joe will post some pics soon. Whew, glad thats over with :) ...

Great news! Really glad it al worked out. What was she like on full power?

Vincent 11-18-2003 03:47 PM

RE: Wren 44 help

Paul,

The jet was not over powered at all, just the right power. Full thrust for take off ,maybe 250 ft. and she was airborne and climbing out nicely. There is some question about our tailpipes might be undersized a bit and this could be robbing some power?? not sure but the motors run smooth and powerful to me.
