Hi I have a weston pipe for a os 91 were do you place the pressure tap on the pipe thanks for any help..

Hi,
With these pipes you use fan (pitot) pressure, JMP or Trim
do very neat pickups which mount on the fan shroud, very easy to fit. I used two of these pipes on my Phantom reliably. Watch
out for the vibration causing the retaining springs to eat into the
flange, I just redrilled the holes when it looked a bit suspect.

I have a Westons pipe on an O.S. 91/Byron fan, purchased from Dennis Fuentes of JD Enterprizes, in the USA. It already had a pressure fitting installed in it. Is this something unique to the Byron pipe, or maybe something done at JDE?

Hi,
I've only used them with Ramtec and Dynamax fans ie tractor
fans, I've never used one with a pusher type like the Byron fan so maybe the Byron's not suitable for pitot pressure. Perhaps someone out there can answer that one....

Pipe Pressure
 

I suppose everyone has their preferences, but I feel that pipe pressure is the only way to go. I have a jet that I bought second hand with fan pressure. I would have to set peak rpm on the ground with the transmitter knob at max lean. Then once in the air I'd have to turn the knob all the way rich and would end up not quite rich enough. After a dozen or so flights I converted it.

I have never had any of the alleged problems with pipe pressure, and have found it to be very reliable on all my DF's. What I like best is the range of authority pipe pressure provides. It goes all the way from too lean to too rich just by turning the transmitter knob. I never have to touch the mixture valve. Just start it up, a couple of clicks on the knob and go fly.

Anyway to answer your question I think just about anywhere on the wide portion of the pipe will do. I put mine about half way down the pipe. I used an Alumiweld rod to put a small boss or bead on the pipe, then drilled & tapped it for the pressure fitting. JB weld should also work.

Hi thanks I allso have a byron fan os 91 I looked up jd web page I will go ahead and place the tap in the same spot it seems to be on the same spot in the weston page allso?

Let me know how the Weston pipe works out for you. My next winter's project will be a DF Enforcer. I have a Top Gun Byron pipe for it, but have been thinking about a Weston pipe for less weight and less tear-up to the fuse.

on my dads mig, we have the pipe preasure tap right on the apex of the front, when we bought it from denise last year at fresno, he showed us the location and we did it right there and flew it .

I too don't like pitot psi for the same reason as above, on my two FA18 singles, I could never get the engine to run rich enough, I even tried a radical aproach, installing TWO pitots in the fan and routing one to each main tank, ( did'nt work eather ) :(

the bigest problem, ( the only two problems ) we are having with the weston pipe is, it has a healthy apitite for header orings, easy to change, so not a problem, the other is the high level of vibration in that area, loosens the preasure tap, so we have it jbwelded, and keep an eye on it .

having said that, throw that baby on your jet, youl love it, the needle is not overly sensitive as has been said of mini pipes and in fact, gives the eng. a fairly broad power range, you will want to set the idle mixture fairly lean to get a reliable idle, ( typical byron set up ) and that should do it .

The Weston Pipes from JDE all have the pressure tap installed on them from the factory.
And a Reminder to all who have purchased the pipe make sure the pressure line from the pipe to the tank is as short as possible this goes for both the tractor and pusher version if the line is left as it may have been with another tunned pipe system it is to long and the air passing over the line will cause it to whip thus causing the line to work on the pressure fitting causing it to pull out of the pipe.
Also the 2 springs that hold the pipe in place should be trimmed so that these springs do not eat into the rubber bumper o'ring or the Cylinder head from vibration.
