Difference between glow planes
fartdragon,
Nice name! :D Jet models are very similar to prop airplanes in that they use the same types of control systems, and fly by same rules of aerodynamics. The differences are that they (many of them anyway) can fly much faster than prop prop planes, most jets have relatively high wings loadings, and unlike prop planes when you get the airspeed of a jet too slow you cannot get out of trouble by simply applying full throttle and flying out of it. With a prop you get immediate airflow over the control surfaces when you add throttle, but with a jet all of the thrust is out the back of the airplane (behind the control surfaces) so you must wait for the airplane to accelerate in order to have sufficeint airflow to regain control. You have to allow for this when making laning approaches and make any go-around decisions as early as possible to avoid getting in trouble. All of this applies to both ducted fans and turbines, but with turbine powered models you also have a significant delayed throttle response. It can take as much as 6 seconds for some turbines to spool up from idle to full throttle, so you must be even more "ahead of the airplane" if it is turbine powered. Because jet models usually have a high wing loading and go very fast you cannot horse them around the sky like you can with many prop planes either. The higher the airspeed and the higher the wing loading, the wider your turns need to be to avoid overstressing the airframe. You just mentioned "jets", you did not say whether you were interested in ducted fans, or turbines. There is a large difference in the cost between the two, but here are some ballpark figures for what you will spend to get a "jet" in the air: Ducted fan = $2,000.00 up to however much you want to spend Turbine = $5,000.00 up to however much you want to spend + a lot that you don't want to spend. :D |
