MIG 23? Flogger...
 

Years ago, in either RCM or MA, I saw a foam jet (60 size I think..) that was designed for use as a military target and they were selling them as "R/C".

Anyone remember this? If so, I would love to find a "Flogger" to fly as a prop-jet! :D

I have seen one of these fly, not to bad I might add. Could be done up really nice. The new Tamiaya Spray Paint should work on that foam

I grew up in Baltimore. Two guys that I grew up flying with, Steve Stricker & Ron Stahl (Ron is here on RCU), used to fly these for the military guys. They worked for AAI or RS or somebody. These things are cool!

Yep Mark is right about us. The Mig was designed by my friend Steve Stricker when he was at RS systems. It was first a target plane flown by a K+B 61 and then they used several differant engines for power. When RS systems lost the contract for the targets to Goldberg they started selling them to the public as a sport model. The plane was designed to be assembled in the field with the supplied radio stuff in 15 minutes. We used them as a second step trainer in the RPV world some years later. They fly ok but you have to remeber that they were designed to be a throw away plane with a 1 flight life span, so some beefing up is nessary for a everyday plane.

Got one hanging from the ceiling at my local hobby shop bare bones (uhhhh, bare foam that is) here in Lubbock, TX. I don't known what price he is asking for it. Its white foam and the control surfaces are currently held in their proper place with duct tape.

Sorry Ron, Steve flew a lot of MIGs but I designed it. He did help improve it a great deal. I think Steve was at Camp Jejune, NC the week I designed and built the first one. Kirk Wicker made the first flight. Steve and I spent a month flying at the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville Alabama, in the summer of 1983, to qualify the hardware for us by the Army.

Come to Mississippi Afterburner next week we have a couple of them as Traget Drones for Paint ball guns, and potato guns.

We would not be called redneks if we did not discharge firearms at something!!!

No renting the pigs though!

Just for some background (I'm glad DavidR is on our)

The very first time we used these targets for live fire was at Ft. Campbell Kentucky (summer 1983). We were flying some left over airplanes that we had used for contract qualifications (they were already beatup). A group of National Guardsmen/Guardsmen were firing in groups of 20-30 with M-16s mostly short bursts. They refer to this as massed fire. We only flew two flights, the first flight lasted until fuel ran out (airframe only had a couple of hits in it).

The second flight we flew for the groups .50 cal machine guns, on the second pass the .50s found the target, foam rained down to the cheers of all.

Anybody that can hit one of these with a paintball or potato gun at more than 20-30 foot range is O.K. by me, GOOD HUNTING!

Several years ago we shot a "ROund TUit" out of the air with a spud gun, the plane was a big round disc of foam with a dynamax fan glued to the top. It was pretty cool when the potato hit it.

Chris is right on the nose as to how and when the plane was built. But what he has left out was how he came up with the design of the plane. I remember we took a plastic model and assembled it. Then cut the fuse into many sections( Sliced it up!) the pieces were then laid out on a copier to make copies of the cross sections. Then those were enlarged to a size that we could make templates from to cut foam with a hot wire. When all the sections were cut, they were all glued back in order and TAH DA!!! a fuse. then the wings were cut, engine put on. and a quick spray bomb paint job. Now mind you Chris and us did this in about two working days (8hr days), Chris had a great idea and we ran with it. The Company really had know idea what we were up to! I did get to do the 1st test flight at the old ag sight out in Beltsville. Just one of Chris's and Steve's bright ideas. One funny thing was that when the powers that be saw the prototype they loved it. Then the Aero enginers got involved and said the wing was to far forward and would not fly as built. Well we knew it would fly and we bucked the upper management (made a bet) and proved them wrong. There were other birds too. AV-8 Harrier, F-16, Hind-D helicopter (auto Gyro), A Mig-21 BC ( Before Chris)

Now how could anyone forget you! I take it that you still are involved with the shuttle? I saw Bic green a few months back when I landed to get fuel in Farmville Va on the way to an Air Show I was performing at. Steve was not there but was still with AAI.

OMG, Paul getting married... Who would have thunk it. He was at My 1st marriage with Steve, Tom Kirk, etc.... I guess I'll have to take that 5 bucks I owe you for the beer and use it to buy a wedding present! :D When is the wedding?

If you ever get up this way around Manassas area give me a shout. Might even be able to sneek out and get you a flight in the Sukhoi 29, S2-C, or my 450 Stearman I use for wingwalking.

I'm heading out the door now to fly a friends Edge 540 at Warrenton.... He says I might like it!! HA HA AS you know ... I LIKE EM ALL!!!!!!
