PPG/Model Master compatability

Hi guys,

Does anyone have experience painting Model Master paints over PPG DBC or DBU and then clearing with 2021?

TIA

Well......ya. It is not a problem Matt. Look on BVM's site at the afterburner pics from this year. The back end of my Phantom is done exactly that way. I have also used them a bunch on my old Phantom, and also did some repairs to Vernon's Phantom last year and used Testors over some DBU. Just DON'T wipe the Testors down with the DX 330 cleaner......it will really ruin a great day.

Thanks David

What is that new clear you are using, Flex and Flat?? Does it use the same reducer as 2021?

Matt,

It is 2060 flex n flat. Great stuff, I mixed a little 2021 in with it for an egshell finish but I am going to shoot some straight out of the can this weekend. It uses the DCX 61 catalyst, and the same reducer......as usual thinned way out.

DR

BTW if you let it set for more than a couple of days and then apply ANYTHING to it make sure and lightly scuff it up with a very fine (grey) scothbrite pad.

What is "it" the DBU or the clear?

Is the DBU the uncatalized stuff??

matt,

when I shot 2021 over the testors metalizer buff'n stuff it kinda took the luster out of the finish. it still looked good, just not as good as the buff'd finish. I figure the other model master finishes would hold up just fine.

The metalizers need to be sealed with the Testors sealer first.

Matt I scuff everything between coats. DBU is some of the older PPG paints (before the DBC stuff we use now) I have also used the DCC paints these are catalysed and could be used without a clearcoat, or with the clearcoat mixed in. I don't know how they would work as flats though as they have a pretty high gloss on their own.
