Oldest Turbine Pilot?

It is often said that older pilots should be flying huge, slow, trainer type aircraft like giant Sig Kadets because they can't see very well and their reaction time is measured in minutes. But I don't think that is true. Two of the Minneapolis area pilots are well into their 60s and seem to do alright.

So I was wondering: who is the oldest turbine pilot you guys know? No need to mention names if that is too personal.

Oldest That I Know

The Oldest Turbin Pilot that I know of is
Don Hoffman from Bradington, Fl.
In his mid 70's some where & flys a Kangaroo &
Hot Spot 7 I must sat does a very good Job of it.
I just hope I can fly any RC plane as Well as him
When I even get close to his age.

Old does not mean you cannot FLY. Ever see Art Johnson fly? He's eighty-something, and as cool as a cucumber. GREAT pilot. Don't know if he has any turbines, but he can fly as good as or better than anybody around...

Col. B. Thacker,
comes to mind for me. Flew the F-82 from Hawaii to New York in the 40s if I am not mistaken.
And does (or did) some competing as well with his F-15.

Right...can't forget Col. Thacker. Saw him lose an engine on one of his many, many P82's and bring it right in and taxi up to his feet on one engine. Never even broke out in a sweat.

Ben, man, you'd better eject from this thread...David R. put you into an unrecoverable flat spin!

Tom Antlfinger 06-25-2002 02:03 AM

Oldies but Goodies

If you want to learn how to land a Kangaroo on 300 ft of asphalt, only 35 ft. wide, watch Don Huffman do it at Bradenton, and stop half way down the runway. He da man!!

Col. Robert Thacker doesn't fly turbines! Jim Drever does.

I know this will get the Thacker's juices going!

There are two boys in the Mississippi Gang that have been flying turbines for a little over a year now. One was 13 the other 14 when they started flying them. Both have their waivers as well.
