old tom cook starfire
 

hi i recentlyaquired a old starfire with the square intakes,it was fitted with a os.77 in a dynamax fan,will this be enough to rotate and fly the bird? any info on this particular old jet would be deeply appreciated

I have flown a JMP Starfire IIa and a IIb, but never an original Starfire. I should think that the .77 should be more than enough to fly it.

Can you post a pic. I haven't seen one of those in a long time.

okay heres some pics,i just gutted her today after work,i aquired it with everthing intact but thought it would be a good idea to take everything out and check over everthing,+ i did'nt like the idea of ele. sharing 1 servo,generaly i want to do it all over on the inards and put some lighter radio equipment in it and juggle some stuff around

another ? is how much should the max weight be! from what i've been told this is 12+yrs. old,the fellow who built did a nice job on glassing and blending it all in with the fuse,also it looks like he used real thin ply for sheeting on the wings,they're solid as a rock!! other then a little hangar rash cosmeticaly everything looks to be in good shape,heres pics of fan unit and os.77,this is a dynamax? am i correct,lmk,john

Glad to "super chicken" is still flying.
I built that airplane in 1995. It was one of the last, if not the last Starfire II that JMPdelivered.

I've got one of the last kits Tom sold of the Starfire IIb. One of my flying buddies bought it when he heard that Tom was not going to sell them anymore and he only had 2 left.
I guess I'll build it for turbine power some day.

could anyone tell me what would be a good auw for the .77 and dynamax setup in the ole starfire,10lbs,11lbs,12lbs,or lighter? is this fan more on the topend then on the bottom?how much tarmac am i gona need,thanks,john

Both of my Starfire IIs weighed 12.5 - 12.75 lbs. I've seen them flown as heavy as 14.5 lbs. I don't know if that helps on your airframe.

HI,I owned and flew the Starfire 1 and hated this jet, first off I would put in a OS 91 because one lean run and your 77 is toast.
The Starfire 1 flys OK as long as the engine is running, once the engine quits it drops like a brick, those big inlets are like speed brakes.

okay fellas,i'm all done with the refurbishing of the ole starfire,my auw dry is 12lb.,it is now refitted with a bransy new os.91vrdf large head,it took alot of work making a new fan hatch but its done! a few? i have i probably asked already but i want a success after breaking in the motor,1- is i'm using the same tunedpipe that was on the .77,yea or na?2-is the 24oz.tank is in the canopy about a little higher then center of carb,15in.away,with a 2oz.header tank on side of fan shroud,tank is fitted for pipe pressure,fill will be done threw header tank where i have a T and will pinch off the line to carb when filling,and cap off T when filled,is this workable? and the most important ? is seeing that i get the engine to run and all other systems are ok,where is the COG? also what about flaps! will this bird handle rog without? and how about landings without flaps? how slow will she slow down without dropping? i do have df exp,its just been awhile(12yrs) i have byron mig-15(*****cat)byron a-4(hairy) and a parkinsons reagal eagle supreme(nice flyer) under my belt,but they where all pushers! never no exp,or have i ever seen any tractor type df run! all help is deeply apreciated! oh and one other thing,at this time i did not put in a inflight air/fuel mixture,how critical if at all is this? i consider myself a good engine tuner,thanks,john
