It was an F-104. The one in the movie did not have the rocket in the tail that the real one did. I think it was referred to as a "Space Trainer"

RE: JET?
That would be an NF-104A, serial number #NF-762. This was one of three modified "A" model -104's with "G" model tails operated by the USAF Aerospace Research Pilots School. These aircraft had an LR-121/AR-2 rocket engine... a bit different from a stock -104, but do-able with simple mods to a -104A kit. My uncle T.K. flew one in the late 50's... :D
Century Jets has a -104 kit, as does Avonds. Hope your "jet skills" are up to date...should be an exciting ride! Barry |
RE: JET?
The one remaining example is mounted on a pole at Edwards. Everything you need to know with lotsa links:

RE: JET?
im positive it was the X-1

RE: JET?
Actually, the other "jet" he 'crashes' (not really, just departed controlled flight at high Mach but landed OK) in the movie was an X-2A....the one he punched out of was the NF-104A.

RE: JET?
FunFly, were you asking what is the jet he crashes at the END of the movie? If so, that is indeed the NF-104A. If earlier, that's the X-2A.
