F-18 flaps??
 

The full size Hornet uses flaps and ailerons deployed for landing. I would guess there is some sort of elevon mix to control roll during final?? would this be possible or even practical on the big model Hornet?? .

Hi Vincent

It should be possible by using a Flaperon mix to droop the ailerons with the flaps and still use just the ailerons for roll control.

I still have a thermal glider and a little Sig Something Extra that is set up that way with Flaperon mode.....drooped flaps and ailerons, with aileron control for landing rather than Crow, i.e. up ailerons with flaps......in both cases, ailerons get mushy so need to definitely be at high rate when in that mode....also have to be careful that AOA of the wingtips stays slightly lower than the roots when droop deployed our you end up with a mutha that likes to tip stall and snapper-do....the way I check it is to go way high and stall the bird and correct till the wing drop is minimized.....

I'm still grounded with the cracked boom on the BigCat......so now spending more time on the SJ 16......still trying to get the landing attitude to look like your greasers......but still bend a nose strut about every 5th landing on grass....arrgghh!

Thats ok Tom, its taken me about 10 landings with my new Hotspot to get it right. I don`t like the top mounted speed board and the effects it has on pitch.I ended up dialing the deflection down each time until i was comfortable. The bottom mounted one i have on my Rookie isa better setup imo.

Shaun and I set my F-18 single to drop the ailerons with the flaps. I did fly it a couple of times like that and everything Tom says about it is exactly what happened to it. It was very temper mental and mushy. It did look cool though!

Hi

I setup the ailerons to droop when the flaps were lowered and to top it off I mixed the stablizers with the ailerons.

But I never flew the Yelllow F18 twin like this. I have used this exact same setup on several other models with sucess but is it really worth it?

I have to be honest it looks cool but fly's sluggish compared to convential controls.

Besides remember we are just guessing at the mixes since we don't have a flight control computer with AOA data.

Remember, the full scale hornet has the flaps and ailerons hinged to work like slotted flaps, That means better airflow when they are all deployed flaps-down. Without the slots, you should expect less performance, mushiness, etc. I am rebuilding a JDE F-18 with slotted flaps & ailerons. That will be interesting.
