Fitting Aileron and Flaps to an Avonds Eagle

Hi Folks
Has anyone ever fitted Aileron and Flaps to an Avonds Eagle.
If so how successful was it and would you recommend it as a mod ?

Mike,

I added flaps on my Avonds although as of yet it is still unflown. If you want to see how I did it you can go here:

I know Geoff Wallace and Mike Cherry also added flaps to theirs.

The wing is soooo thin out at the ailerons, I don't think I would attempt the ailerons. (someone here in the states did do ailerons though) Everything I have heard about the Avonds they are just not required. The full scale aircraft gets the majority of the roll control from the stabilators anyway. I plan on adding a mix to allow the flaps to provide some measure of roll control should for some reason I lose one of the stabs.

For that matter, flaps are not required either but I love the scale look.

You dont need either flaps or ailerons with the PA F-15. This is one of the most stable and slow flying scale jets you could ever hope to have. One of the local guys flew one for many years before he sold it (he misses it now) and I had a Avonds F-16 without ailerons. Both are great airplanes. The PA kits are very simple, build quickly and fly wonderfully. I have build 2 Rafales, a F-104 and the F-16 and getting ready to order another F-16. Philip is going to start selling the new F-15 all composite with panel lines very soon. He tells me it is the most scale 15 around. I'm not a rep - just a satisfied PA builder.

I love the one I built! But I am not convinced of the composite wings though. I like the old fashioned balsa/foam/fiberglass.

But on the other hand Philip's stuff is first class

I have a set of wings at home for the Avonds kit. I added both the Flaps and Ailerons. I will take a pictue tonight, but need to get a card reader since I lost the cable to my new DIGI CAM. I did add Flaps and Ailerons to it with no problem. I had someone strip the fuselage for me and remove the formers, and the guy disappeared on me, so know I have everything but a fuselage. I will try to post a picture of it early next week.

Hi Mike,

If it ain't broke, don't fix it - the Avonds F-15 is perfectly controllable under all conditions using stabilators only. Aside from that, why cut into a perfectly good wing to add in complication, more parts and, hence, more things to go wrong?!

Cheers,

Dick
