RE: Kerosene VS Jet A
jet a is basically a kerosene but cleaner and has some additives! in term of lubrication, you need to add the 5% AEROIL, so they end up the same.
JB4 is the same with added chemicals to prevent ash build up on multi $$ millions engines, not ours. |
RE: Kerosene VS Jet A
Joe,
The last time I bought kerosene was a month ago at a local gas station. I paid $2.25 a gallon for K-1 clear. That was a good price since some stations had gotten as high as $3.50 per gallon a few months ago when gasoline was over $3.00 per gallon. The fuel treatment I bought is caled "BioBor JF". The marine supply store had several different brands of algeacide for diesel fuel. I bought this one because it is also recommended for aviation fuel and kerosene. I paid $15.00 for a 16 oz. bottle. From the formula on the bottle it takes about 2 cc's to treat 5 gallons, which I add while pumping the kero into my can. If you don't have a marina or marine supply place nearby you can order it on line. If you can find the 8 oz. bottle that is more than enough to last forever. Here's a link fot it: http://www.hammondscos.com/fuel/biobor_jf.html Joe |

ORIGINAL: mnmills2 While we are on this fuel topic...how about oil. Ive used the Aeroshell. However, yesterday, I couldnt find any but I could find BP turbine oil. Any difference? Mike BP used to be the oil of choice, then some manufacturers started recommending the Aeroshell instead, supposedly due to a greater chance of "coking" up with the BP oil over the long term, than with Aeroshell. There used to be a blurb about this on the AMYUSA web page, but I think that has gone now with the new ownership of AMT creating their own website. Gordon |
RE: Kerosene VS Jet A
hello question for ya. i buy kerosine at the local gas station but it doent say k1 on the pump. it only says kerosine. i assume its k1. it looks clear and clean. i have been running it and seems ok. i would think gas stations would only handle k1 kerosine...thanks pat
|
RE: Kerosene VS Jet A
if it's K1 out of a pump and it's clear it's very likely old stock as it's required to be died red to prevent it being used in on road diesel engines (tax evasion).
|
RE: Kerosene VS Jet A
hello i really dont remember if its clear or not. i assume though if its sold at the gas station out of the pump its k1 dont you think
|
RE: Kerosene VS Jet A
it should be.
|
RE: Kerosene VS Jet A
i just looked at my kerosine. it has been mixed already with turbine oil. it does have a red dye look to it... i think thats what you ment..pat
|
RE: Kerosene VS Jet A
from what i see as long as its kerosine and not disel its fine..

RE: Kerosene VS Jet A
if you're buying it out of a pump and it's clear, it's either pre July 1, 1998 stock or you're paying road tax on it.
|
RE: Kerosene VS Jet A
its safe though isnt it ..pat
|
RE: Kerosene VS Jet A
yes you're just paying more for it because it's taxed for on road use.
the reason for the red die it to keep truckers from filling up with non taxed Kero or off road diesel, on average you can save 400 bucks on a fill up if you use off road or Kero. |
RE: Kerosene VS Jet A
it is pricey 3.89 gallon. disel is almost a buck less... i fly out of martin state airport in middle river md. and have access to jet a1 but is lot more expensive...
|
RE: Kerosene VS Jet A
if i catch the right person at the right time JP-8 and Jet-A are Very inexpensive at $0.00/gallon, Kero out of the pump is $3.73/gallon so i try to avoid it best i can.
|
RE: Kerosene VS Jet A
i here ya thats my kind of deal. always nice to know people isnt it.... the kerosine is less then a mile from me so it is a convience
|
RE: Kerosene VS Jet A
I buy pump kerosene from BP (on the way to the field) and is dyed red and does not say K-1. The pump kerosene from Hess says K-1 and IS clear and does cost more. K-1 pumps are far and few between around here, but I do have a choice between Jet-A, K-1, and regular kero. I used Jet-A in the early days, but now I almost exclusively use reg. kero because it's just easier.
|
RE: Kerosene VS Jet A
really what is the differance between regular kero and k1.. i think is really crazy. why dont they just make one kind wouldnt that be easier
|
RE: Kerosene VS Jet A
When I reference "regular" kero, I mean red dyed kerosene. As has already been stated, the dyed kero is not taxed and therefore is not legal for on-road use. Most consider K-1 to be a much cleaner (more pure) kerosene and is usually burnt in stoves or heaters.

RE: Kerosene VS Jet A
so the kerosine that i bought that doesnt say k1 will be fine ?
|
RE: Kerosene VS Jet A
Yes, I've been using the same stuff for years in multiple brands of turbines.
Fill up, and go fly! [8D] |
RE: Kerosene VS Jet A
thanks george.. where do you fly at in va.. i just bought a boomer sprint with p70 rtf.. first turbine jet... cant wait to fly it.. what are you flying ....i think i am just worrying to much..
|
RE: Kerosene VS Jet A
R,
I live in Va. Beach and fly at NALF Fentress (one of the nicest places on the east coast). I'm always rotating stock of aircraft :D, but currently have a Bandit ARF, CA Euro, and AW Turbo Raven. I'm currently out of the country, so no flying for awhile. I'm sure when I come home I'll have a new project or two to add to the fleet. Good luck with the Sprint, it is a great flying plane and the P-70 will be perfect for you. I understand you being a little concerned for your first jet, but don't worry, the kero will be just fine. Again, good luck. George |
