Anyone using Mobil 291 turbine oil?
Hi Guys,
Until now, I have been using Mobil Jet-2 turbine oil. However, it looks like my local distributor is no longer carrying this oil. They are stocking Mobil 291 instead. From what I can gather this is a synthetic turbine oil. Has anyone out there been using 291? I'd like to hear if others are using this oil and, if so, are happy with it before running it myself. RE: Anyone using Mobil 291 turbine oil?
The Exxon Mobil data sheet shows that 291 conforms to and exceeds all requirements of specification MIL-PRF-23699E.
This is the spec that many of our engine manufacturers require. Go ahead and use it in the proper ratio.........have fun. Don't spill it on your paint. Use Google for your search engine....enter Mobil 291 turbine oil on the search line, and..........you will find it there. Harley Condra BVM REP Team JetCat |

Garrett:
Mobil 291 is their new "4th generation" synthetic turbine oil.....Mobile II was their 2nd generation oil, and 254 was their 3rd generation.....it meets Milspec L23699, and is one of the new 3rd and 4th generation "low coking" oils produced by the various turbine oil producers.......should be similar to Aeroshell 560.....I am thinking about switching to it as soon as my current stock of 560 is used, as it is about $30.00/case, or about $1.25/can cheaper than Aeroshell 560...... Thanks Guys. That is much appreciated. I'll pop out to the distributor at the airport tomorrow and grab half a dozen cans and some more Jet-A.

RE: Anyone using Mobil 291 turbine oil?
Hi,
I work in full size aviation and this 291 oil is a new spec i read about it on a customer airlines technical notice. For info it is a low coking oil and it is also supposed to resist swelling (viton rubber swelling i think) of seals. It's rival in the market is esso 2197 another new spec oil...Physically they are all mil-l- spec 23699 but the 2197 is a strange light straw colour. ciao David |

RE: Anyone using Mobil 291 turbine oil?
How many quarts of oil are in a case? Thanks...
|
RE: Anyone using Mobil 291 turbine oil?
There are 24 quarts to the case. Turbines, like big diesels, generally hold a significant quantity of oil.
Our Pratt and Whitney T-34-P9W's held 15 gallons in the tank, about another two gallons in the lines, main pump and scavenge pump. Harley Condra BVM REP Team JetCat. |
RE: Anyone using Mobil 291 turbine oil?
Harley, I have never bought a case of turbine oil. What does it cost to purchase and to have a case shipped to you? Thanks...

ORIGINAL: Synthetic Harley, I have never bought a case of turbine oil. What does it cost to purchase and to have a case shipped to you? Thanks... Go to http://www.oil-store.com/ and enter your chosen oil into the search. For Mobil 291 they show $8.19 per quart, or $171.09 per case. The shipping can be quite expensive though. If I recall correctly, when I bought 4 cases of Aeroshell last time, the shipping as over $100. BTW, note that if you are not going to be flying a lot, and/or sharing your order with friends, a case may be overkill for you. At 1 quart added per 5 gallons of kerosene, that's 126 gallons of fuel - which might take you a while to get through. Gordon |
