Painting Question

I am painting my first jet and will follow John Redman's writeup "Painting a Jet". How much is the primer reduced for the brush coat?

Thanks,
Pete

Primer

What is the brush coat? IS that for the seam or something?

FOr most priming you have to spray it, the reduction depends on the paint and the gun

FOr most priming you have to spray it,

If you have glassed wood surfaces, you are far better off brushing the first fill coats of primer. It takes far less primer and you can fill the low spots and any pinholes much easier.

As for thinning, it depends on which primer you are using. K36 can be thinned about 20% for brushing. I use MP182 primer and 10% thinner is all you need.

And always use the fastest drying thinners in primer.

Painting Question

According to these instructions the first coat is brushed on and sanded down. Then the primer is sprayed on as usual. I assume this is to force the paint into any pin holes etc... The paint is ppg K-38 ( old K-36), K 201 hardener, and DT 870 reducer.

Painting Question

10% thinner or even less, for brushing. I use rubber gloves and then use my finger to get it in the pinholes. :D

Painting Question

I brush K36 Prima strait up, no thinner. You will be sanding 99% of this coat off and the spraying a coat before colors. This process does a fantasic job of filling pin holes and glass weave. I use a black and decker mouse with 280 grit to sand the brushed primer down then finish sand with 400 before finish priming.

No problem, I have the doc now. I found a thread where it was mentioned that John had written it and he would email it to anybody that asked.

Well I asked for a copy and almost immediately John had emailed a copy to me! :) Unbelievable service. Thanks John I appreciate it.
