..I have to question what the point would be of having them...

....Afterburner means more thrust, which means more fuel,

Mike

..Spot on Mike, there is no point of having them...not for us anyway.;)

Afterburners are a low pressure combustion system which puts more heat into the gas flow and provides a thrust boost.... but this thrust boost is Proportional to the square root of the temperature change...i.e you have to chuck bucketful's more fuel in..loadsa bucketfuls..;)

You're probably right about the restrictions that would be slapped on us.

However, I make the claim in the interests of reproducing the realism of the original rather than wanting more power, more speed and more thrust to weight ratio all of which we can all agree are completely unnecessary with modern turbines.

Personally I would just rather see the fuel effiency go way up!

I agree I would like to see the fuel efficiency go way up.
The amount of fuel some of these jets take off with and the resulting wing loading is for me nothing short of frightening.
If we get the fuel down we can bring the take off wieght down which means less tarmac runway or and even your local grass field. ie you no longer have to trek to a specialist facility
The planes will be a more pleasant to fly and cheaper to run. Less fuel means less fire risk and everyone wins. The spiral goes in our favour.
