looks like at one point OS used to make jet engines ... not turbines, but jets nontheless ....

who known, one day they may hit the turbine market ...

That's a pulse-jet engine, similar to the old Dynajet. It operates on a very simple principle. The full-scale German V-1 rockets used pulse-jet engines, and their sound led to them being dubbed "buzz-bombs."

I have never seen nor heard one of these type engines run, but I understand they are VERY loud!

Wojtek & Tom,
I saw an F-16, which had been flown with a ducted fan, converted to pulse jet about 12 years ago.
They started it at the end of the runway, released it,(no throttle) and flew it till the 16 oz tank was empty.....59 seconds

LOUD is an understatement!

OS made two sizes, one similar to the US dyna jet, the other similar to the Tiger jet (smaller than a Dyna)

I have had two of both sizes. Pulse jets are neat, but I'll stick with my Wren MW54 from now on...

The first link shows the OS Type 1 pulsejet. These are incredibly rare. I've run across pulsejet engine collectors who have hundreds of engines, virtually every one ever produced except for that elusive OS Type 1. The OS Type 2 (II) is much more common; it is basically a Dynajet clone.

Beleive it or not, there were some FIFTY different pulsejet engines made in the forties and fifties...maybe twenty from Germany alone. Somewhere I have the old AHC book on jets, shows such oddities as one with a bifurcated pipe, one where the pipe takes a 90' bend, all sorts of weird stuff.
There was a P-80 Stickjet that was throttleable. And the MEWjet that was built from an old CO2 cartridge, that you filled by dunking it into a bucket of raw gasoline...

MEW

EASY,
I built one of those MEW co2 engine things that was featured in the back of a MECA newsletter about 4 years ago.

Had about -3 ounces thrust! I was afraid it was going to blow (going back to my younger days where a boy knew how to pack a Co2 cartridge with matchheads and gunpowder, doh!) but it just went "pssssssst" like a jetex but without the thrust.
