What Happened To Observations Thread??

WELL, THIS IS STRANGE. I GOT BLASTED ON A RECENT POST CALLED OBSERVATIONS: SOME OF THE POSTINGS ON RCU.

IT WAS STARTED BY A PERSON NAMED TRIDENT.
AFTER I POSTED TRUE FACTS... I BELIEVE IT WAS DELETED.

CAN ANYONE SHED SOME LIGHT ON THIS?

DINO

This time I wish that the moderators would let us have this thread and hash this out. As long as no threatening remarks are made I don't see a problem. But, you know what they say about wishing----wish in one hand and do something else in the other and see which one fills up first. Kevin

Kevin,
Where have you been the last two threads?? lol.

I thought this should be a good one .....

Can a moderator tell me why it was deleted anyway?

Dunno. I think, while the subject WAS important, it might have all gone too far, too fast, and sooner or later, a subject like that always goes off the deep end.
Maybe it is just better to ditch all the most violent debates. In the end, we may all be better off without it. Me, I love a good argument, but it's better in person than on the internet!

Icemanjr92 10-11-2002 12:57 AM

Very true Easytiger!

But, I do not believe this was an argument.
This had some very important true facts from the horses mouth.

I believe it needed to be shared, and still do.

Man things happen fast around here don't they. Don't know where my post went, must have got kinda nasty there at the end. Who would have imagined that? So now I want to bring out the big guns and say "Can't we all just get along"?

Since there is a good chance that this thread will be deleated very soon I just want to give out praise to peeps. . .thats slang for saying " hey doods, thanks a lot and I'll catch you later" for the uninitiated:-)

Is it just me or is it getting hot in here?

GCS

Icemanjr92 10-11-2002 01:20 AM

dunno...

GCS,
Glad to see you back... I wondered the same...
Left work, went to the airport to do some full scale flying, came back and it was gone...

At least I saved a copy of the thread before it was gone....

Again, welcome back my friend.

What Happened To Observations Thread??

Well, here it goes!!! I hope that this does not turn into another opened can of worms.....

Dino, for what it's worth----I believe you. There are just too many underlying facts to dismiss this as purely coincidental. Lewis had a genuine fear that he was being gunned. I don't know why (and we may never know) but something transpired to make Lewis uneasy. Jerry Caudle thought that someone was up to something----hence his outburst on the P.A. on Saturday. And for those that question how an airplane can do a snap roll while in failsafe---I'll give ya a logical reason. When the airplane was closer to the offending radio and the offending radio has the sticks cranked to a snap roll position, the plane executed a snap roll and then went into failsafe due to the RX being overwhelmed by the two TX's. Now, I would like for someone to tell me that there is no way on this earth that this scenario could not happen!?!

I know the difference when I fly my plane whether I dumb thumbed it or I just plain "ain't got it"! There is no worse feeling than to manipulate the sticks to the stops and realize that you are locked out. I actually broke a TX gimball trying to pull a plane up that would not respond. When a battery fails you never regain control. When you have interference you can regain intermittent control. Isn't this what happened to you? You and only you knew what the sticks felt like. Kevin

Okay, so to re-cap, we were all in agreement that we want to be civil to each other and then what happened? Did someone throw a tantrum or what? Why was that posting nuked?

Icemanjr92 10-11-2002 01:44 AM

Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Ya know... Thanks for agreeing. I said snap roll... I never though that RCU'ers would jump on a word or statement such as that. The plane sharply, quickly, rapidly...see where I'm going with this?.... rolled on its back and locked out. Then I regained for what I thought was 100% strength. That lasted until right base to final. Then ... nothing. Everyone is right... and I am not disagreeing. I don't have any proof at all. I know my flying and equipment. Ya know, thats all I need to know.

I wish I knew.....

Regards,
Dino

As far a PCM failsafe and how things can happen. Here's a very real scenario that has happened, and may have happend in this case.

If the radio went into failsafe for whatever reason, and the pilot is reacting like Kevin said, and is bending the sticks on his transmitter to control the plane with no results.

What do you think is going to happen when that reciever comes out of failsafe. Bingo - SNAPROLL. You've got the sticks bent all over the place, the plane going to react once the signal is clear, and plow right into the ground.

From experience, when you think your in failsafe, don't over control the sticks, if you can't control yourself from doing that, let go of the sticks entirely, and wait a couple of seconds, and see if you got control back.

Icemanjr92 10-11-2002 05:13 AM

sticks

Sixshooter,
You are correct. Only thing I don't understand is the I didn't bend the sticks until it rolled over. The plane was straight and level. After the plane rolled on its back I realized I had a problem, lockout... thus moving the stick slightly and then more with no avail.

I kept moving them until I finally regained control. Set up for my landing, gear and flaps down. I had control until I was on short base to final. During a slight right hand final approach, the plane locked out for the last time thus hitting the brush in a slight right dive attitude.

I may never know.

Dino,

If you knew you had a failsafe condition why did you not shut down your engine?

Kevin,

What underlying facts are there? Lewis feels someone is trying to shoot him down, WHY? Evertime I have ever talked to Lewis he has been a very cordial, and pleasent person I don't see why anyone would want to terrorize him. What has he ever done to anyone?

I may be coming off as hyper critical of certain individuals but that is not my intent. I have a hard time believing this conspiracy theory that is blowing around this series of crashes and incidents at this event. Again why would anyone target certain people, such as Dino, Lewis, anyone??? No one has YET shown any real hard prrof but the accusations keep flying. Dino you have to admit unless you have your failsafe set to do a snap roll the snap roll has to sound a little peculiar to you as well if you were looking at it from a more neutral perspective.

David,
Here is a letter I sent to a nice fella who asked me some questions. One more thing, please separate myself from Lewis.
People get us mixed up with this conspiracy issue. His problems in the past have nothing to do with me, at the moment. I asked Lewis to spot for me, that was all. I keep getting the same questions and giving the same answers. The only difference is that those who wish not to accept my answers keep nudging my experience.
I have learned one thing, it is amazing how some individuals change comments around....

"If you knew you had a failsafe condition why did you not shut down your engine? "

What would shutting down the engine do except possibly
let me not make it back to the runway? This was my decision as the pilot. The engine was shut down while on the ground.

Previous email:
Hello,

Thanks for your email. I will try and answer your questions as best that I can. Regarding the Talon, That is a sweet machine. I agree, I to think it is a little heavy. I told that to Bruce when he sent me a kit. They are checking into that now. As far as the flight, The first problem occurred shortly after takeoff near the center of the field. it was flying straight and level. All of a sudden it turned upside down. I had zero control for approx. 3-4 seconds. Mind you this was in a left to right pattern. After that time, I regained control. This seemed to be 100% control. At that time I dropped the gear and flaps and made a circle to slow the aircraft down. I still had perfect control. during my right hand base to final, the plane was aligned up with the runway. Then again I had zero control, nothing. I had plenty of time (approx. another 3-4 seconds) to move the sticks all over showing Lewis Patton that I had lock out again. It simply went into fail safe. I knew I had a MAJOR problem and told Lewis I was not sure if it was coming back...
One thing, The Talon is going to be a show stopper.
You will be amazed how it flies. Especially the slow flight....
Keep your eyes peeled!… IM going to show all the non believers!... lol
I had a similar problem at a field flying my plane.
I was making a pass, then the plane turned left and locked out. Afterwords, we found a person with a collapsed antenna who admitted he had turned on. It was the same feeling.
I have been flying for 23 years. That does not make me perfect at all. I am human and make errors. Hell, I strained my fathers FW-190 through a tree! Due to depth perception gone bad. But this was not my dumb thumbs. The radio used in the F-15 was my personal radio I had Fed Exed up from FL Friday night after the crash. It was a totally different radio and crystal. When I took off the F-15, I had the same problem in the same exact area, except I never recovered from the lock out. I also had checked other pilots on that channel. There were NO problems at all. So, I wish It was easy to say I screwed up. It would make my life easier. I could put this to bed. Not knowing, sucks.
If you have any other questions, feel free to email me any time.
Thanks again.

We have yet to meet but I would like to say I am very sorry for your loss at superman! It is always hard to swallow the loss of a plane, to loose two in a weekend can be devastating.

Thanks Todd!

Losing two planes is no joy. The talon was new for me but the F-15 was my baby. I had over 30 flights on it. That was one of those planes that just got better and better and was a sweet flyer. I hope to meet you in the near future. What other events are you attending?

And I have the video! I'll keep it under wraps-for a fee! LOL

HEY JON!
I have that video somewhere... Boy, were those the good old days. That was such a case of dumb thumbs!
How have you been? Any new projects? As you heard, I now have spare room for something new! Such as modeling goes....
How is Jon Jr.??? Please say hello for me. Was nice to hear from you... To bad you weren't there to take these videos!!

Keep in Touch,

Hi Dean,
Working on a Vampire and an Usher 106.
Was looking at some old movies from Oakland, remember the
B-24? I've got some pictures of Jon cleaning my Antic bipe, guess he was around 5-6. I think I have some of you when you were a tyke, at one of the picnic's I think. I'll find it-someday!
You know you're old when you are cleaning your KIDS plane!
Regards,
Jon

PS. Don't let this BS get you down. You don't have to explain to anything to anyone. You explained what you think happened, they can belive it or not-who cares what they belive!
We've got building to do and planes to fly!

Icemanjr92 10-11-2002 04:24 PM

True

Hi Jon,
I to have some OLD videos from 1983 and on....
Was the start of my modeling career. I would never change one thing I have done in the past. Great times with great friends.
Thanks for your comments. It doesn't bother me that people trash me as a pilot. That comes with every hobby. I have delt with that for many years. Especially from people who don't know me at all.
What does bother me is the fact of individuals making up stories to try and hurt others using me as a tool. Then I get defensive.

This ordeal will not make me feel different toward anyone. I will keep doing what I do best, enjoy friendship and fly.

Keep in touch,
Dean

Dean,
I'm not one of these guys that can say they been flying a hundred years and AMA number is 0001 and I certainly dont know everything or act like I do. I have been flying turbine about as long as everyone else. I now own quite an extensive fleet of turbine aircraft. I do fly them, not just look at them. I follow RCU on a daily basis and have been following these threads about your great misfortune. I must say that I dont know who you are, but from listening to you on here, you sound like a genuinely nice guy. You have taken all the slams in stride and sound like a real stand up guy. You've been nothing but polite and respectful to everyone. I couldnt imagine losing two aircraft to radio problems and then defend myself as screwing up. I have learned that you have been a Top Gun Champ and that itself is somthing to not disrespect. I hope one day I could be invited to participate in Top Gun, only problem is most my stuff is built by someone else. Anyway, you sound like a great guy and some I would want to meet and fly with one day. Youve taken alot of heat and sound like a real gentleman. Sorry about your loss.
Scott Marr

Icemanjr92 10-11-2002 10:52 PM

Stride....

Hello Scott,
Thank you for your comments. I do appreciate them greatly.
This whole issue got way out of hand. I usually do not post anything on RCU. Unfortunately, I had to on this. I can take much abuse on any matter. I look, listen and learn. I even learned something from BV at Superman. Proving that I to do know have all the answers and never claimed to. I just find it hard to understand why individuals have the answers to something only I dealt with. If I observed a plane suddenly falling out of the sky, I could never make statement claiming I know what happened, unless I witnessed a control surface separate from the aircraft or a similar item. Although I do not agree with certain discussions I hope does not make me a bad guy.

Ya know, I take pride in my winnings at TG but you would never know it. It took me years of non stop practice to achieve that goal. Something I continue to work toward. Practice, Practice and Practice! Top Gun has been a great event. Either as a participant or spectator.

If you are ever in the area of West Palm Beach, let me know.
I love flying...... and the more friends the better! We will have a blast.

Regards,
Dean
