Calling Jim Fox... BAE Hawk help

I need to get a hold of someone that knows the true transgression of the Jim fox BAE hawk. It seems to have been sold once or twice to different companies. I own one and am planning on converting it from D/F to turbine.

Which size have you got? There are/were 3 Jim Fox Hawks. The big one is 1/4 scale. The middle one is 1/6th scale and there is a small one about 52inch wings span. All fly well, though I do not think the big one was ever a ducted fan.

My son and I have the 1/6th scale. The moulds and parts are now owned by PJP Jets and they have been most helpful regarding spare. If your model is well built and not too heavy it flies beautifuly on a Wren 54 MK3. Others have installed a Jetcat P80. We scrapped all the bypass aft of the front former and installed a 3 litre tank and a Wren jet pipe. If you keep the bypass, then you need to make yourself some conformal tanks or use a blood bag (over which there has much controvesy). Simon Peckham's model for the World championship caught fire during trials in mid air and was utterly destroyed using the blood bag.

I personally think the lighter you keep it the better and that the Wren conversion is better than the P80. We are thinking of upgrading to the Supersport for which you need a slightly stronger pipe.

I spoke to Larry at JHH today and got some info i guess mine is the 53"6th scale one.. i was told in a pm the jim fox version had rivet detail on the aft fuse which i do larry said the cg for his hawk (same plane?) is on the front of the landing gear plate where is your cg?

The smaller (1/7th ?) scale Hawk also had rivet details all over the fuselage (gorgeous glasswork BTW) .. I used to have one, but sold the kit untouched after a while because I was having a hard time finding suitable gear.

Hi Guys,
Jim's correct email address is:

[email protected].

I checked it with him just a few minutes ago....

He does not check it very often, but he is working hard at his new 'Fox Composites' business near Pattaya, Thailand.

I am in regular contact with him, and see him occasionally if you need to get a message to him.

Later,
Mike Cherry

excellent in the mean time does anyone have the flying stab setup and cg? i was told that the jhh hawk is setup at neutral tail with the trailing edge 3/332 higher than the leading edge.........

My CG is very much the same as the Jet Hanger - ie on the leading edge of the U/C gear. Your photos show that you have the tailplane correct with the trailing edge about 1/32 below the top surface of the fuselage.

Incidentally you have the smallest version (1/7 scale?) and I believe the only person who can help for spares etc. will be Jim Fox.

hmm 1/7th how did you guess that from the photos or the dimensions i gave?

also the markings does anyone recognize them? AB???? the tiger on the inlet are these scale? semi scale? hodge podge?

Not a guess at all. My wingspan is 63inches. My fuselage moulding is more accurate. For example:- your intake nacelles in Pic1 do not seperate the boundary layer from the fuelage as per the full size. Your intakes for the secondary engine are incorporated rather than glued on and are blocked off. The ones on the 1/6th scale are fully functional. The tailplane is not exact scale in that it does not rock on the rectangle extending below the root rib as per the full size. The 1/6th scale is a lot more exact than anything else presently on the market apart from that produced by Airworld Modelbau. I am uncertain whether even that has the single peice tail plane of the full size and the 1/6th scale and look forward to seeing one close up.

The 1/6th kit when new was about twice the price and you do get more as a result. In short when you have spent more than a year or so building one - you can tell at a glance.

Best wishes

Glad to hear that you got the info from Jim. I'd love to see that puppy fly when you get her done... though that may make me rue the fact that I sold mine.

Do you need any specific info?

I have the small JF Hawk and although I haven't flown it (still not built yet) I do have all the instructions with CG and control throws etc. Let me know if I can help.

Pete

Please pm price and other details. If I can - I will. However I am loathe to cut more holes in my existing wing. With a Supersport in it, it is going to be really fast and I would not wish to reduce its strength in either the loop or bunt. Of course, if a composite wing becomes available.........

I think it is time you pointed out that the World Champion is far from scale around the tailplane! I was very surprised that he won. I can only presume that the Judges are dead ignorant about the finer points of the BAE Hawk! It must be worth an article in RCJI.

Best wishes

Also, if a (one off) ;) composite wing were to become available, for the 1/8th ...........
My wing has been ripped about by the previous owner, and now by me, so i'm slightly worried about integrity inflight with the 44.

Cheers,
Dave

It must be worth an article in RCJI.

Its already been done as there is a full review of the Airworld Hawk kit components (fantastic quality) in next RCJI AND a walkround of the BAe hawk T1A as used by the Red Arrrows. The latter thanks to the Reds at Scampton two weeks ago who loaned me a Hawk for an in depth photo shoot.

No, off to do some more work on that Hawk !

Regards,

David Gladwin.
