Bandit tailpipe upgrade?
Can I replace the old BVM single wall stainless steel tailpipe ,ceramic blanket, aluminum foil ,sheet .003"aluminum outer tunnel and ejector nozzle with just a dual wall tailpipe?
Seems to me I could save a bit of weight in the aft end. What are you guys running? |
RE: Bandit tailpipe upgrade?
I will be doing a mod like you have suggested soon. I will get a double walled stainless pipe made much like the superbandit and do away with the stainless bit in the nossel. Its just a much better way of doing it.

RE: Bandit tailpipe upgrade?
I substituted a pipe from Tam into my Comp Bandit after I got a pin-hole burn thru on the original pipe......I left in the ejector nozzle and ceramic blanket, but removed everything else......had to move my ECU battery a bit forward as the pipe with bellmouth was a slightly heavier......
Just sold the plane at FIJR after about 120 flights with the pipe........worked perfectly with aft fuse remaining very cool..... Tom |

Hey Bud,
Many have done with double wall pipe. It weigth less and run cooler. RE: Bandit tailpipe upgrade?
Hi Tom ,
So your tailpipe had a bellmouth? This was not with the bypass then? If the dual wall tailpipe is heavier do you think there is some advantange with it? Jake |
RE: Bandit tailpipe upgrade?
A dual wall pipe, if done right, is much less heavy than the insulation blanket alone. Just so long as there is a bit of air coursing over the outer wall of the pipe, that should be enough to protect the fuse. There are insluations out there that are better than that blanket crap too, much lighter also, made from kevlar weave and aluminum foil. Heck I think even triple wall is lighter than that ceramic blanket stuff.
I know Tam is the expert, but I mess around with this stuff for turbine heli's. We don't get the inflight cooling that you guys get from forward air movement. Our RPM's are less too tho, it is still hotter than you know what and a PIA to get the heat out of a fuse. The insulation I mention is a Vario product, and you can get it from East Coast Vario .
