Going to do a bit of cross posting from my blog here...as I just can't help but share. :)

One of the joys of "scratch" building a plane...so I'm told anyway...is that every so often you can take a break from the various "assemblies" or parts or whatever you're working on, and just step back and admire stuff.

I really didn't get that idea until tonight...I was standing there, trying to figure out something else to do before going to bed, and there just wasn't anything left...everything was drying, or curing, or gluing, or whatever.

"Aww, screw it...I'm gonna see what this bird's gonna look like."

So, I grab wings, stabs, etc...and just set everything where it belongs...I just HAVE to know....

I'm flabberasted.

Well, bah...there are SUPPOSED to be 3 pictures there...edit mode shows that there are 3 distinct and correct image links. Not sure what's going on. All 3 are at the blog. :)

EDIT : Just attached the other 2.

gboulton-

Yea, I thought so. I went and checke the blog pics and I'm pretty sure its there all right. There is a BIG hole down the middle of your airplane ..... ought to fix that. :-) ;-)

in reality, I'm jealous you are that far ahead of me.

RE: Regal Eagle - A Journey

Yeah...I'm also a little worried about the stabs...they're only held up by blocks, and I'm not sure where I'll find blocks large enough to hold them up while it's flying. :)

Just keep slugging away, Bob...It definitely seems that BP is right about one thing...once you get the subassemblies done, things stat happening pretty quickly...or at least it SEEMS quick after spending all that time making a fuselage that looks like a boat. ;)

here ya go guys this is my atempt at adding gear doors i got a good start on the nose wheel door and it works great then i started on the mains and low and behold another problem (dagnabit!!)im not for sure what im going to do with this i figure i can do one of two things i can redo the wire so that it has a dogleg just above the tire so it will tuck deeper into the fuse or i can make a bubble in the door so it will cover the wheel kinda like a a-4 my delima is if i put a dogleg in the wire that will push the wheel further forward and im afraid that doing that it will make the tail of the jet drag on takeoff and landings (it will over rotate)it would be like moving the mains up to the c.g. if put the bubbles on the doors and had to belly land i dont think they would take the beating
any ideas?? im really scratching my head on this one guys help me out
gordon
nice work!!! keep pluging away its getting there fast!! i travel all over the country for work and you never know sometime i might get close enough to bring my r.e. and fly with some of you guys... i was up by bob just this last summer for 4 weeks

RE: Regal Eagle - A Journey

Hmmm... It seems as though there are only two solutions. 1. if the gear can be mounted deeper in the fuse, you could sink them deeper and use gear with longer legs. 2. I'm sure that gear set opens 90 degrees. If you had a gear set that opened more than 90 degrees, the gear could be mounted at an angle so that the wheels were completely buried and still open to the correct angle when extended.

Otherwise, I guess let just the wheels remain exposed when the gear doors are closed. Then, if the gear won't extend and you have to make a belly landing, the plane will still land on it's wheels? Or make a bubble as you described.

The nose wheel door looks great Donnie. You guys are makign me jealous. I've been looking at DF's now too, but I'm afraid it'll be a while before I could take that plunge. You'll have to carry that torch alone at our field Gordon.

Well dang Donnie. In my heart I'm interested but in my wallet I'm not. Wallet wins! LOL Thanks for asking.

Oh come ON Tom...we're the only pair crazy enough to try formation flying with a Stick and a PAttern plane...immagine what we could do with TWO OF THE SAME PLANE. :)

You KNOOOOOOOOOOOOW you want it.

RE: Regal Eagle - A Journey

Aw shucks... I'm pretty sure I dont' want it even without asking Donnie's price... but what the heck... I guess it doesn't hurt to ask.

Donnie, what will the price tag be on that RE??? I've got... like... $75 burning a hole in my pocket! LOL Just kidding. Not trying to be insulting at all.

I just got back from the hobby store where I dropped yet another dime on Ultracote and such. I do looooove this hobby, but gotta have some self control.

I thought I was about 10 times too low :)

Though it sounds like a good deal, Donnie, I'm going to have to pass. But if I hear of anyone looking I'll send them your way. I'll just have to live vicariously through Gordon.

RE: Regal Eagle - A Journey

Given what I know I'm putting in mine, that's an excellent deal. Just suck it up, Tom...surely you can sell some planes. ;)

================================

The word for the evening is "bleh", as I have ONCE AGAIN failed at Plastic 101. The thrust tube is NOT going well...the problems too numerous to mention.

I think I'm going to take a "thinking break" for a couple days, and try to figure out a different way to do the thrust tube, perhaps exploring Gary's jig for his bifuricated tube.

*** ****** I hate plastic.

RE: Regal Eagle - A Journey

you can do it brutha!

Naw.. can't buy anything right now. I still have a giant scale half built on my kitchen cabinet! I should be in there right now finishing that thing so I can get it outta there! And I want to keep all my other planes. (that wasnt' too whiney was it? LOL)

Gordo, we should build a fiberglass biflabberized tube anyway. I want some fiberglass experience!

PS. so this means you will not be at PAC tomorrow?

gboulton 02-10-2006 09:11 PM

RE: Regal Eagle - A Journey

I may be at PAC some time consulting with Mike on exactly that idea, actually...but no, not building there, as the plane's at home in the shop now.

Tom has a giant scale in the works? I guess this spring is going to be interesting :D

Bill has a new one ordered, my new one, Chris' new one...Gordon's bipe....our neighbor is going to be quite upset.

LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!! just kidding gordon no i understand the money thing my sock drawer is empty also and i owe a gentleman 400.00 for a byron f-16 but all pull it out of my butt somehow well back to the bench working on a trainer for my youngest son and the r.e. and the byron mig-15 and the ...... i got to many irons in the fire!!! donniercjet

hey guys by the way my next r.e.(after i build a stock one) has been blown up 70% so it will have twin byron fans its about 114 inches long and a 90 inch wing span the fuse will be 16 inches wide and 10 inches tall im shooting for 25 pounds think it will fly?? donniercjet

I was just thinking that very thing, shakes. :) And I'll tell ya this much...last time I saw Chris fly his, he swre he'd never go back to a small plane again....and now that I've flown my bipe, I agree...the big ones just fly better.

I suspect that the Eagle will be the smallest thing I ever build from here on out. ;) (Well, ok, I WILL put together another stick at some point, just because it's too much fun *heh*)

========================

Going to head up to PAC today around 10:00 or so, and see if I can pick Mike's brain for some ideas on the thrust tube...there's GOT to be a better way to do this than trying to bend sheet plastic into compound curves, ya know?

The Regal Eagle is a great flying airframe. Good luck with it. I've built several of them.

Here are some pics of the last one I built. Included is one pic of the jig I used to build the bifurcated thrust tube. I would go with a single thrust tube out the middle for simplicity.
Hey Gary,

Would you mind sharing some details on how you used that jig to build a finished thrust tube? I'm a newbie to this sort of thing, so I really don't understand what you did with the jig.

Thanks!

gorgon
the easyest way to fiberglass a thrust tube is to get a large flat object (i use a big piece of glass)the best fiberglass that i found to use is a package from walmart (in the auto area) i also use there resin lay down some wax paper lay your fiberglass on your flat surface mix your resin pour in on spread your resin around with a stiff card (i use a junk credit card from the mail ) drag off the excess to the side and let it dry for 48 hours peel it off the wax paper and roll it (you only need 1 piece of fiberglass) i use this method for all my byron jets thats how i do it anyway.......donniercjet
