String Ray Pictures and Flight Testing

Well I have put 14 flights on my StringRay and I must say this thing flys very well. I started with 1/8" up for washout in the Elevons and had no trim change. The aircraft weights 11 3/4 lbs.
And holds 60 oz of fuel.Ny CG is at 5 3/4" from the wing root meeting the fuse.Be sure to put a strong servo on the SpeedBrake you will need it on landing depending on wind cond.
program your elevons to max travel it will help takeoff.I also put about 2 degrees+ on wing setting on the gear.Mine gets off in a bout 400 ft but if I rase the nose I can proberity get off in about 325 ft. Feedback is welcome.
See Dean at Heli Hutt CA to get yours,I have already ordered another one. Good Luck on Yours.

Hi Kelly
I am useing the Robatr 550 series on the mains and a Rom air jet gear on the nose.Struts are currenty BVM Durastrut but I am changeing to the 660 series offset struts from robart. I think it is the 652 right and left.
Dean Whichman if the spelling is right.I thought it was
Heli Hutt Ca but It Might be Heli jet. I will have to find out.
See that is what happens when you have your head stuck in a jet all the time. Paul JPOFL

Great job Paul!! Glad you like the kit.

Paul was the first customer of Helijet R/C Int. to receive a Yellow Stingray. It took him very little time to build this beauty. For anyone interested - Paul will be offering a turn key service for those customers that would like a professional looking S'Ray. Well Paul - looks like you will be putting one together for me too!

Dean thanks for the cutoos. If you want this one or if you have a customer that wants this one let me know. The only thing I do not want to sell the engine. Oh Ya I did get 5 1/2 mins at about 3 clicks over half thr. on 60oz of fuel and had about 1/4 tank left.Good for a goaround or two. Paul
Hey check out the lights.

Those lights are a great idea Paul! I saw Larry Kramer fly his BobCat with those at Superman '02 and the visual was outstanding. It would really help when turning onto final with small frontal aspect birds such as the F16 / S' Ray etc. Do you sell them Paul?

Hey Dean. Yes I do sell them there are about 6 different sets avavable. We can talk about them by phone.By The way BV was flying out the field today and walked over and checked the StringRay. And the lights is what got his att. I will drop off a set or two to him this week.He is thinking about the booms on the bobcat. They should fit just fine and He will most likely put them in the front of the wingtanks on the Rafale.
Keep them shinning. Paul
Here is a picture with the plane out of focas. Like it would look like at a distance. They realy stand out.

Any More On Flight Characteristics?

Paul,
Anything else you can add regarding flight characteristics?
- Any bad/unusual habits?
- Would this make a good first turbine airplane?
- Could you land it on a 400 ft. runway?
- How is the ground handling?
- How would it fly with a detuned P80?

Joe

Hi Joe your wanting to know how the stringRay handles
I did have some ground handling problems but solved it with a gyro on the nose steering. I have been taking off in less then 400,But I do a slow rollup and I use a good 100 ft up doing that.
I also have about 2 degrees positive in the wing. But I think you could easy go 4. Which will help to rotate. In the air it flys like a ninble pattern aircraft.I slows up well using the speedbrake. The airframe is so clean you will most likely miss your first landings. It would be a good idea to slow it up. Up high to get a feel for it.Make sure you leave enough fuel for a go-around! Other than that I have no problems with the StringRay. I am starting Another StringRay this week and If I make any changes I will Post them.
As far as the first jet You Bet!!!!
Good luck Paul JPOFL

Hi Paul,

Seeing as there really isn't much info about this kit available elsewhere, can you post a summary of the servos you used, if its possible to install gear doors, and how the fins and wings are attached to the fuse?

Oh, yes one more thing. Can you roughly tell me what the angle is between the molded engine mount tabs? If I ask Dean to order me one, I'd like to make a custom PST motor mount to fit.

Thanks,
Kelly

Kelly, if you can, get a hold of some of the RAM 500 mounts. They should work fine. That is the way we mounted the 500 (and soon to mount a PST/TJT 600) on Richard's modified Roo.

Yellow has in stock motor mounts that will fit the Wren MW 54 / RAM 500 / Simjet 1200 / PST 600.
