Jumping into Ducted Fan
Hello! I have been in the hobby for a number of years and I wish to get into ducted fan. I LOVE scale airplanes and for my first ducted fan I want to have a scale plane. I am also on a tight budget. I don't mind building and assembling my first model totally, in fact, the more I get to build on the ship the better. So what would be the best scale jet for a good price that a newcomer to jets could fly? Thanks.

The Top Gun F-15 or Mig-29 would fit the bill perfectly. Call them at 815 433-6132 and have them review each version of their F-15 and Mig-19. Their website is down right now, but nothing beats a live person to person conversation. They specialize in first time jet pilot success stories. It sure worked for me and countless others. Paul

We offer 9 scale jet aircraft that are reasonably priced and which build very straight-forward. Our F-86 is an excellent entry level jet--and alot of fun to fly even after making the transition.

I have purchased and flown the Top Gun F-15 (byro fan) and I have to say that the best cheapest and better flying plane for a beginner is the Byroblaster enforcer. It's not as good looking as the F-15 but will fly circles around it in any flight envelope. It's easier to land due to it's very light wing loading and faster if you want to push the envelope. If you are used to building balsa planes the enforcer is a breeze to build since it's a balsa jet. It's a balsa USA enforcer that has been modified to put a Ducted fan POD on it's back. Their are many sites out their that show you how to do it and you can even order the plans for the conversion.
The plane choice depends on what you are looking. If it's a fun everyday flyer that will get you going into ducted fan cheap or do you want the good looks with it at a more expensive price. My 2 cents. |

But if you are looking for scale airplanes, as was stated in the initial post, TG and Byron are only so-so for accuracy. LAR (Looks About Right) scale is alright if it suits you!

JHH F-4
My first experience in building a DF was a JHH F-4 phantom. It is a decent plane to build. I was impressed at how well the kit went together. I think the phantom's look great in the air.

I have been flying a JHH F86 for a couple of years. It is a very good flying plane!

Hi,
Check out the fleet at ww.yellowaircraft.com too. We have an A-4, F-4, F-18 and F-16 that are very, very tough to beat as far as price v. quality is concerned. They are the best priced birds of their quality anywhere, and they fly great, too. Email if you have any questions. Good luck! |

They are great, you don't even see them at jet meets. I take it back, you do see them in the pits!

Ramtec2,
Which jets are you referring to, JHH, YA, TGA,.......? Peter |

What are you guys talking about?

I would guess he is talking about the Y/A kits as the word great is referred to in both posts.
Its a sure bet he is not talking about TGA. At the jet meets I have been to, the pilots of the TGA kits are all flying the heck out of them. The TGA kits are a little larger than most of the Y/A and JHH kits. I have noticed that they are easier to see in the air, can handle higher winds and can hold up to the abuse of everyday grass field operation. The JHH kits were small and always a chore to build with a lot of balsa block sanding etc. I do not know if they are still that way. I have also built and flown the Enforcer and I liked my TGA F-15 much better and so did the spectators and other pilots. I liked it because it grooved better in flight, but they probably liked it because it looked like a real plane. I read where you were on a tight budget and the Y/A, JHH and TGA might not be the least expensive kits but I suggest you take a look at them, especially TGA Good Luck Paul |
