Starter Jet???
I have been flying props for a while, and have recently gotten into helis, but my ultimate goal with flying was to build and fly jets :) I first saw them about 10 years ago in So. Utah and ever since then I have had my mind on jets. I have been looking at several differnt ones, which do you think is the best starter "trainer"???
Please keep in mind that I am looking for a good trainer not nessasarilly the best overall manufaucter :) I have been looking at the PCM DV8R with a Jetcat 80 as a starter for a couple of reasons, 1 it will give me good expreiance with building them, 2 it is a little more cost effective to start off (I know that they are expensive) but it nice to start out small isnt it?? 3 the power plant is right in the middle of the recommended. Please advise thank you |

racin _vegas. take a look at the Facet 2300 and the Facet 1200 the 2300 can be flown with just about any turbine size, I know someone who fly's the 2300 with a 12 lb turbine. and mine was flown with a p-80 and now have a p-120 in it. the facet 2300 is an easy build, fixed gear and is very rugged , will fly off of any type of field. and the cost of the facet is not high, very reasonable

RE: Starter Jet???
I did a few waivers for guys in Vegas a year or two ago, so there are definitely turbine pilots around you who can hopefully help you out as you try to figure out what goes where in a turbine etc. I also visit Vegas several times a year (to feed my wife's slot machine addiction), so may be able to help you out with the waiver process as needed.
There are a whole range of aircraft & engine combos that are beginner friendly - from a Boomerang to a Bobcat, with all of the Facet, DV8R, etc models inbetween, plus the "docile" scale models like the F15 that are also newbie-friendly, and the range of costs varies with the model and the powerplant. I think that part of your selection process should be based on the question of "what do you want to fly next?" You can get into the turbine world relatively inexpensively with something like a Boomerang and a P60 / Bee / Wren etc., but if the model that you want to fly as your first post-trainer turbine is something that needs a P120 or similar engine, then either you need to be able to afford having 2 turbines at that point, or you are going to have to sell the smaller engine to partially fund the larger engine - and if you need to sell the smaller engine then you should perhaps consider whether economics favour you having a P60 / P80 sized trainer and taking some loss when you sell that engine to buy another, or whether it may be cost effective to just buy the engine that suits your '2nd model" from the get-go and buy a trainer that will handle that powerplant. RE: Starter Jet???
Gordon - Thank you for the offer on the wavier and the assistance. I appreciate it, I have not found any of the turbine pilots yet, but I do know that they are out here.
trioval00 - Thank you for the suggestion with the Facet, however I am one that likes to the "extras" with the models, and for e a jet with a fixed gear is not proper. Not that I have somthing against them I just like would like to have the extra features. As far as the model and power plant, I think the PCM DV8R with a P120 may be the right chioce I have heard nothign but good, I really like to build and would like the expreiance with the turbines, and the powerplant will let me move it to another model in the future. |
