Is this DF Stuff worth something?
I am assembling a Ziroli/Midwest kit of a He-162 that was manufactured about 1978. The engine is a K&B 7.5 DF engine from around 1979, and is new in the box with all the papers and accessories. The fan is an Axiflo RK-40. It is also brand new in the box with everything still sealed up.
Before I open up the Fan kit for construction, is it worth more as a collector? When I say kit, this thing is really a kit. You build everything from the shroud to the mounts. Also, Is the K&B DF engine worth anything more than usual? I intend to finish the He-162, but wonder if I might get a newer powerplant without spending more money. Bob |
RE: Is this DF Stuff worth something?
hmm, EasyTiger would probably be the guy to ask on this one. I don't think the engine is worth anything as a collectible, and I really have no clue on the fan itself.

RE: Is this DF Stuff worth something?
you won't get alot for the kit, the engines are traded on ebay like cards. So if you like the plane build it. If you wanted to really sell it as a collectable build it then sell it.
I had one converted to turbax fan, the shroud on top was modified to work. Unable to get the Rk fan so just modifed mine. The plane flys realy well. Had mech rectracts in mine and looks cool in the air. |

Cool, Thanks!. Do you have any pictures of your He-162?

Older kits can bring some money if they are NIB on the popular acution site.
I got over $250.00 for a JOY products Aronca C-3 kit. JOY later became Balsa USA. I suggest you do a search in ebarf including sold items to see if fan & engine are worth selling or flying. |

You can get $50-100 for the fan and motor, ebay is the place. There were different versions of that motor, front and rear intake, the rear is worth a little more. Neither the fan or motor have any collector value, they are only valuable to someone who wants to USE them. Like you. Consider that the only other engine for this plane would be an OS46, and they easily cost over $100, and don't put out significantly more power(if at all), why not use what you have?

RE: Is this DF Stuff worth something?
Easytiger,
You need to be a little more specific about which OS46 DF engine you are referring to. The "older" OS 46 VFDF is an infinitely more reliable engine than any of the K&B 7.5s (both FI or RI) with equivalent output power, and the newer OS 46VXDF will blow any K&B 7.5 out of the water in both power (the VX has 25% more output power than the older VRDF) and reliability. Regards, Peter |
RE: Is this DF Stuff worth something?
All true, but the guy is saying he does not want to spend...might as well go with the 7.5, which is an okay engine. EITHER OS is much better, but either costs a lot more!

RE: Is this DF Stuff worth something?
The engine I have is a K&B FIRE 7.5 DF engine with header and pipe, all new in the box. I think it would ge for about $100 - $150 based on the cost I have seen them go for in the past. Used K&B df engines usually go from $80-$110 I have actually found these older K&Bs to be very reliable and easy to use. I do agree that an OS would be preferable. By today's standards this fan is pretty large for this size aircraft. I was shocked to see that a regular ABC engine was used in testing and still produced over 6 pounds of thrust. Using the Kress graph, this DF engine should produce about 7.5 pounds of thrust.
So, from what I can see, I could not purchase a comparable sport engine (OS 46 AX) with the proceeds from this engine. In that case, I am going to run this booger. Even if I didn't put the engine in a DF, I would run it on a kaos or something because it has got to be a bullet with a 10x6 prop. Thanks for the input, and the picture! I'll post some of mine as I get it ready. This is my first DF, and I hear this is a fine aircraft to start with. Bob |

I sure would have liked to seel the kit, but it was fouled by the previous owner. He eliminated the trees and labled every part with felt tip pen.
