Juango, you have a Viper? ja,ja,ja be ready for some serious fun. A friend of mine has one with a Wren 54 and it is a bullet. I dont think it needed droops, but he did add angled wingtips, sort of like an F-4.

Will you fly it with a turbine or Ducted Fan?

RE: BVM ULTRA VIPER LEADING EDGE DROOPS NEEDED !!!

I am the owner of the Viper that Falcon mentioned above. To be totally correct its an Ultra Viper which was the last version of the Vipers. I buit it and flew it for the first5 or 6 years of its life as a DF with BVM .91 and the aircraft was totally built stock per the plans.

To convert to turbine I cut out the DF inlets and replaced with Bandit "Turbine" inlets. The Bandit turbine inlets have a slightly smaller inlet opening at the front and they neck down to a diameter of 3.5 inches which allows it to mate up with the BVM bypasses. I use the smaller BVM bypass ( RAM 500/ AMT Mecury) and the matching BVM dual walled F-86 tailpipe. The fuel tanks are kevlar kidney shaped tanks avail from Gary Mueller and hold about 60oz.

I initially flew this airplane with Ram 500 and the stock wing. The turbine version weighs about 2 or 3 lbs more at liftoff than the DF version. This results in a VERY high wing loading with a stock sized wing. The airplane was a bit fairly easy to tip stall in this configuration including at high speeds if a lot of G was involved. I came very close to crashing it sveral times due to low altitdue tip stalls.

In an attmept to solve this I decided to add some extra wing area. I added to each wingtip a solid balsa extension panel that is about 8.5 inches long and ofcourse carved and sanded to the proper airfoils. These panels have a permantly drooped leading edge ( 1/4 droop) that extend about 5/8" in front of the main wing leading edge( F-4 Phantom style). I glued the extra wing panel extentions on cant upwards like an F-4 just for looks and to try to prevent scraping the wing tips on landings since the wings are pretty long with the added length. The combination of extra wing area ( approx 60 sq inches) and the drooped leading edges illiminated allmost all tip stall tendancies. It will still snap out of a super hard turn at high speed and it still drops a wing tip fairly violently in a slow speed stall but.... it did lower the slow speed stall speed to a more than acceptable level for me.

When the wings were extended I also cutout seperate ailerons and stoped using flaperons. My ailerons are 5 inches long and an average width of just under 3 inches. They are double beveled and gap sealed with tape ( extremly important, as they become very mushy and unresponsive at slower speeds without the hinge line being sealed).

I got the idea for the permantly drooped leading edges from the plans of the orginal Vipers that had this as an option.

Juan, i have a DF Ultra Viper (Viofan) not flown it yet but i did a lot of research for the setup.

I wanted to do some mods, but after asking a lot of questions this is my conclusion:

- fly the UV as per plans (flaperons) if DF

- i will ad the BVM droops temp. with some double sided tape or someting like that (after wings are painted) for first few flights, then take them of and see the dif. > if i want them permanently, i will glue & paint...

also, you can try spoilerons for landing> it should bring in the plane with a high-nose attitude thus bleeding of some speed (land the plane under more power)

DID BOB VIOLETT DESIGN SOME MAIN GEAR DURO STRUTS FOR THE FIRST GENERATION VIPER ?

turnnburn 04-15-2006 11:27 PM

RE: BVM ULTRA VIPER LEADING EDGE DROOPS NEEDED !!!

No duro struts back then I dont think. back then they used wire struts with Robart plastic part to make them look like functional struts. They also used Robart robo struts which were very similar in design to the duro struts that BVM later came out with. Wer

Were u able to find my Ulatra Viper pictures on that post from a year or two ago ?
