Halon and Co2? different techniques needed?
Time for a new fire extinguisher for wet starts.
Either Halon/Halatron or co2 Is the c02 much colder than Halon and more likely to cause turbine damage when shot in the intakes? Does the co2 need to be used differently( not into the intakes to prevent thermal shock) and just shot up the tailpipe? Halons much more costly- but is it better for the occasional wet start? |
RE: Halon and Co2? different techniques needed?
co2 does the same thing as HALON the side afect of halon is is that it degrades the ozone layer
you can just shoot co2 down the intake it has about the same temp as halon so dont worry |
RE: Halon and Co2? different techniques needed?
Halon is banned except for use in full size aviation due the ozone damage problems.
I hear it is also expensive to refill. Regards |

Never fire an extenguisher up the tailpipe. You push some of the flame with it, which means you push a fire into the front of the model. Always start from the front. Steven |
RE: Halon and Co2? different techniques needed?
I have a Halitron one now -I believe it's the EPA friendly replacement for Halon.
Is there a concern with damage to the turbine when it's at running temp and you shoot freezing Co2 or Halitron into the motor? I've been told the c02 is right at freezing temp when exiting the extinguisher . If cold temp damage can occur then shouldn't we use the "warmest" type of extinguisher available? I would rather pay more for Halitron than c02 --IF c02 may damage the turbine. |
