BVM Mig Bypass Needed????
Hi guys. Would like to know if the the bypass is really necessary on the BVM Mig. I plan on using a P-120 detuned to P-80 power.
Thanks Alex |
RE: BVM Mig Bypass Needed????
Alex,
The bypass is an integral part of the flowpath in all of the BVM designs. The only BVM jets not using a bypass tube are the obvious....BobCat and KingCat. The BVM Jets are designed to be flown with the bypass tube istalled. The bypass tube directs the airflow into, and around the engine, and keeps the engine operating is a moving column of cooling ram air. The contained ram air has advantages...the engine is supplied with all of the airflow it needs to support the throttle position you have commanded....no obstructions to airflow demands. No servos or nosegears or other equipment in front of the compressor face. No built-in turbulence either. The airframe interior is not pressurized by ram air, which increases drag and tubulence inside the fuselage. The possibility of FOD ingestion is greatly reduced. Also, since the engine is contained, a start-up fire can be easily extinguished by blowing CO2 down the inlet. A friend of mine flew his Super Bandit with the bypass cover removed, (I told him exactly what would happen, but he wouldn't listen), and proved me correct. It blew the power system hatch off, damaging the vertical fin, and then the canopy hatch left, breaking the transparency when it hit the ground. It didn't fly as well with those parts gone.....a hard learned lesson. He spent lots of $$ repacing parts from that mistake. Lesson: Lots of ram air pressure present....why not keep it contained by using the bypass tube? Some people like how a non-bypassed installation sounds to the ear, but that noise is actually "The sound of drag". I know that there will be lots of "non-bypassers" disagree with what I have just written, but that's okay, I won't suffer. The bypass tube will help keep the hatch installed on your MiG. RE: BVM Mig Bypass Needed????
Alex,
As Harley said there are advantages to using it and the Mig is all setup for it. Why don't you want to use it? The P-120 should fit into it OK... Bob |
RE: BVM Mig Bypass Needed????
Thanks guys. Problem is I purchased the kit a year ago, never completely revised everything that was in the box and now I find the bypass is missing from the kit. The only option I have is to purchase the bypass seperately. Thought I might just forget about it.
Thanks Alex |

Believe me, it's woth the money.
P/N for the P-120 tube is T310, P/N T320 for the cover. Call Patti at 407-327-6333. Harley Condra BVM REP JetCat REP |
