Builders Turbine Models?
Having just been on a Jet Experience day with Paul Heckles, I have decided I NEED a turbine, together with a model to put it in.
Problem is, I am not an ARTF person. I have been flying for 18 years (since I was 12), and in that time have had 3 ARTF models, the remaining 150+ were kits, plan builts or scratch. So, my question. What's out there in the way of turbine models in plan/kit form? They need to be wood, partly as I enjoy working with it, but partly because composites are a pig to repair. Any thoughts/suggestions appreciated Alan |
RE: Builders Turbine Models?
Not many wood kits any more
Kerry Sterner offers Vampire all-wood kits for 1/5 and 1/4 scale. Nick Ziroli offers plans for a Panther |

Hi Alan,
Thorpe Bros have a nice range of plans, and very sought after. They're in the UK too, so you should be able to draw help from a number of people. Scale the F-20 up to your turbine class (not sure if they have plans for their bigger F/G F-20), and you'll have a great jet. I don't know if they are still around, I searched for the website they used to have, but nevertheless you will be able to get hold of a set of plans. Glad to see some more who appreciate the building aspect of the hobby! I wish you well with whatever you decide to build. Regards, Richard |

ORIGINAL: Geoff White What was I saying Alan, once Flown you are hooked! Geoff White. P.S. In all seriousness are you after scale or non scale? Realistically, I need to find somewhere to fly first, on a regular basis. I will e-mail SMAC Secretary and maybe have a visit, but it's a bit far to go. My own club field doesn't have the airspace to fly even a Boomerang, though take off/landing would be OK. So, to start with, non-scale. Like a decent build, but thinking no bigger than P80/Wren Supersport. Like the twin boom setup on the 'rang. There was a recent small plan for a model, Pushy Cat (looked a bit BVM Bobcat ish), possibility of scaling up to 70" or so..... |

Alan,
If you like to kit bash the Balsa USA Enforcer makes an excellent sport flier for a 12-14# turbine. It is fast, very stable, and has no bad habits. Mine was clocked at 160 mph with a Ram 500. It weighs 12.5 lbs. dry and carries 64 oz. of fuel, which is good for a 7-8 minute flight with plenty of reserve. I made a lot of modifications for the sake of appearance, provide room for fuel and equipment, and to strengthen the wing. You could go with a more stock appearing Enforcer and it would fly just as well. Do an RCU search for "turbine enforcer" to see construction pictures of mine and a number of others. Joe |

Kerry Sterner has another wood kit available, the facet series
the Facet 2300, 90 inch wing span 18 to 28 lb turbine or the facet 1200 12 to 17 lb turbine I have the Facet 2300 with a p-120 28 lb turbine. great for grass, rough fields, and it is very rugged.takes abeating and still keeps flying I flew it for a while with a p-80 I was clocked at full speed at 131 MPH and at landing 24 mph. RE: Builders Turbine Models?
Thanks, Gary, come fly it next time you see us.

BVM Super Balsa Bandit. Nothing ARF about it. I'm still on the 2nd page of the manual and it's been 5 days.

I think most people are happy with the Facet series that Kerry Sterner designed. You can buy this kit from Greatnorthernmodels in Canada, a guy in my club is building one of these. Also PCM models has the AV8R and DV8R kits. I've been flying the AV8R with a used Simjet 1200 I bought from the RCU marketplace. It flies great and didn't cost too much, it has fixed gear the DV8R is larger and designed for retracts. I know PCM has shipped kits to England/Europe although I'm sure there's more shipping costs involved! A lot of UK flyers like the Boomerang. Not sure if it's available as a kit.

RE: Builders Turbine Models?
Thanks so far guys, lots of options for me to think about.
|
RE: Builders Turbine Models?
Another option.. design your own jet! had lot´s of fun doing this and 3 new ones are being currently
assembled here, including one to myself. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_19...tm.htm#1975499 Enrique |
RE: Builders Turbine Models?
How about the Discovery jet http://www.uflyhobbies.com/discovery.htm
like Dudley Moore in the movie Crazy People said about the Volvo: Boxy but good! Like Edgar suggested too, the Reaction 54, a real gentle flyer but fast if you want. - John. |
