MW44 Oil Mixture?
 

The instructions for the MW44 and MW54 call for an oil mixture of 3% for the 44 and 2.5% for the 54. That is about 1/2 quart for five gallons of Kero. Most people I know with other brands of turbines use 1 quart for 5 gallons or about 6%. Will it hurt to run either the 44 or 54 on 6%? I am afraid the extra oil might clog the needles on the fuel ring especially on the 44.

Also, are the fuel pumps matched to the engine for the MW44? If I change fuel pumps for any reason would I have to change any ECU settings?

I would ask Wren but they are at Jetpower this week and I would like to fly this weekend.

I had been using 5% Exxon 2380 for my RAM 500, but Carlos noted it developed heavy coking over time. When I got my 44 I used 3% as Wren suggested, and when asked they recomended I run my RAM500 on 3% also. Have run both on 3% turbine oil for about 100 cycles without problems. I cannot see running the 44 on 5%, because of the tiny needles, while I should think the the 54 should run as well on 3% as on 2.5%.

Finishing my last quart of 2380 and am planning next to switch to Aeroshell 500, which has the reputation of producing less carbon buildup. This is not a definitive answer, but what works for me.

DONT CHANGE THE PUMP!
they are matched to the ECU(i have two with strict instructions not to mix the pumps and ecu's)
The flow rate is so low on idle that any mismatch between the revs and pump voltage will cause flame out or flame up!

hello as manual wren recommend 3%.

actually i read you can even use Castrol TTs oil as oil...on the 44

i asked Wren time ago if he was "healty" to run the 44 on 5 or 6% and they said to me, that may be not good..so i use 3%

for the pump, i changed mine after she stuck, and at the first run i increased the trottle very slow, up to full , givin the Fadec time to set herself.

3% is what Wren say, i would do as they say.
I have 100 hours+ on 44 engines, no problems.

Talk to Wren if you want to change.

I have always run everything on 5% including simjet, ram, jetcat and everything wren including the 44. I have never had a bearing fail and theres certainly no coking inside any engine. But, the wren manual says 3%.

There's usually a good reason behind our instructions. In this case Mike Murphy, the designer of the MW44, specifies 3% oil because a larger percentage can cause the tiny holes in the combustion chamber to clog up.

besides its cheaper to run 3%...your expensive turbine oil lasts nearly (but not quite..) twice as long......
